The appeal of avocado comes from its mild flavor, easy combination with many other ingredients and rich nutritional value.
What are the benefits of eating avocado every day?
According to Earth , a recent study focused on how eating an avocado a day improves the quality of meals and encourages healthier eating habits.
Associate Professor Kristina Petersen and Professor Penny Kris-Etherton from the Department of Nutritional Sciences , Pennsylvania State University led the study.
The study, published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition , shows that small, simple changes can improve nutritional habits.
Scientists collected dietary information from 1,008 adults through interviews and based on 24-hour food consumption data.
Participants were divided into two groups for 26 weeks. One group continued their usual diet but limited their avocado intake. The other group added one avocado to their daily diet. Those who ate one avocado a day showed the most significant changes in their diet.
Avocado is a rich source of nutrients.
"Avocados are a rich source of nutrients. Our goal was to determine whether regular avocado consumption could improve diet quality," Petersen explains.
Researchers found that this simple change affected how people prioritized nutrient-rich foods. Eating avocados every day also improved the quality of their diet.
"Avocados show promise as a substitute for foods that are high in calories but low in nutritional value," Petersen added.
Avocados contain fiber and good fats, which help people feel fuller longer after each meal. Avocados also help protect the heart, control type 2 diabetes, and manage weight. Using avocados instead of foods high in sodium or refined grains will increase the ability to maintain a balanced diet.
Avocados, scientifically known as Persea americana , have a long history originating in Mexico and Central America. Indigenous people domesticated the fruit more than 10,000 years ago.
When Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, they brought avocados back to Europe, from where they spread around the world.
