Nearly a third of adults worldwide are affected by high blood pressure and its complications such as heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease and dementia. Hypertensive patients are often advised to reduce their salt intake to control sodium levels, according to The Independent .

Hypertension patients should add bananas to their diet.
However, new research published in the Journal of Renal Physiology (USA) It is recommended that patients with high blood pressure should add bananas to their diet, not just cut down on salt.
"Research shows that adding more potassium-rich foods like bananas or broccoli to your diet may have a more positive impact on blood pressure than simply cutting sodium," said Anita Layton, one of the study's authors from the University of Waterloo in Canada.
Melissa Stadt, another author of the study, explained the recommendation regarding potassium-rich fruits like bananas: "Early humans ate a lot of fruits and vegetables, so our body's regulatory system may have evolved to work best on a high-potassium, low-sodium diet. Today, diets tend to be higher in sodium and lower in potassium. That may explain why high blood pressure is mainly found in industrialized societies, not in isolated societies."
The latest research also shows that increasing the ratio of potassium to sodium can be more effective in lowering blood pressure than simply reducing sodium intake, according to The Independent.
"Although the relationship between excessive sodium intake and high blood pressure has been scientifically proven, the beneficial effects of high potassium intake have received less attention," the researchers said.
New research also shows that men are more likely to have high blood pressure than premenopausal women. However, men are also more likely to respond positively to an increased potassium-to-sodium ratio.
