New low pressure area may cause heavy rain in the South and Central Highlands

It is forecast that this low pressure area will move into the middle of the East Sea and may develop into a low pressure area and then a tropical depression, causing bad weather in the sea area of the Hoang Sa archipelago.

According to meteorologist Le Thanh Hai, tropical depressions that appear early in May rarely make landfall in Vietnam. However, according to statistics, this phenomenon often brings heavy rain in the Central Highlands and the South; and at the same time causes heat waves in the remaining areas.

The low pressure area forming off the Philippines is developing over the intertropical convergence zone. The intertropical convergence zone is an area where the trade winds from the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere meet, creating favorable conditions for the development of weather systems such as tropical depressions and typhoons. This intertropical convergence zone is currently affecting the Mindanao, Western Visayas, and Negros Islands regions of the Philippines.

Some meteorological experts also said that the combination of low pressure and the gradually stabilizing southwest wind will cause the southern region of our country to continue to have moderate to heavy rain in the coming days. Some places in the Truong Son mountain range and the Central Central region are also at risk of heavy rain, localized flooding or extreme weather events.

Updated information as of the afternoon of May 23 from the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention about the rains in the North said that heavy rains damaged 10 houses (Tuyen Quang 8 houses, Lao Cai 2 houses) and affected 81.5 hectares of rice and crops. Of which, Tuyen Quang suffered the most damage with 76.6 hectares.

In Tuyen Quang province, some sections of National Highway 2 (especially in Ham Yen district) were deeply flooded, causing traffic jams. Part of the auxiliary works of Xuan Lap Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School (Lam Binh district) collapsed into the stream.

In Lao Cai, floodwaters overflowed Lang Giang Bridge, disrupting traffic between Lao Cai City and Bao Thang District. At the same time, a temporary bridge in Y Ty Commune (Bat Xat District) was washed away. There were a total of 56 small landslides on roads in Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Tuyen Quang (not to mention irrigation canals that were also damaged).

It is forecasted that on May 24, rain in the North may gradually decrease but the rainy area will move down to the North Central region such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh.
