Stand with the people

Early in the morning of October 28, realizing that the rising water level of the Avuong River was threatening many households in Azut village, the Civil Defense Command of Avuong commune directed forces to go to the grassroots to mobilize and help people move their property, livestock, the elderly, and children to a safe place.

Ms. Briu Thi Nem, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Avuong Commune, said that she and the commune leaders went to the grassroots to mobilize people due to the sudden rise in water levels. When mobilizing, people responded and complied with the evacuation because they realized the dangerous flood situation.

Ms. Nem shared: “In anticipation of heavy rain and floods, socio -political organizations immediately joined the village forces to closely monitor each location, mobilizing people to proactively respond. When the water recedes, we will continue to mobilize people, parents and the front committee to conduct a general clean-up, especially at schools, to soon stabilize daily life.”

Mr. Briu Quan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Avuong commune, said that on the evening of October 27, due to the rising water level of the Avuong river flooding Ho Chi Minh road, the commune urgently evacuated 4 households/17 people of Cr'toonh village living on Ho Chi Minh road to the village's communal house (community house) safely and took good care of meals and accommodation for the people during the shelter period.

Nong Son commune (incorporated from Trung Phuoc town and the old Que Loc commune) is an area that was affected early and heavily by flooding. Ms. Phan Thi Ngoc Dung, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune, informed that on the night of October 26, the locality had to urgently evacuate more than 40 households in riverside and low-lying areas to safety.

By the evening of October 27, floodwaters were rising, and military forces, police, and Nong Son commune's shock troops continued to mobilize and evacuate hundreds of elderly people and children in several residential areas in Phuoc Binh, Loc Trung, and Trung Phuoc villages to safety.

“The water rose quickly and the rain was heavy. The militia and police forces were on duty and stayed close to the area. Along with that, the support and mobilization of organizations, the front work committee and other forces participated in supporting and helping the people. Many households did not want to move, but through mobilization, they became aware of the danger and complied with the evacuation order,” Ms. Dung shared.

In Thanh My commune, rising floodwaters forced the locality to evacuate 127 households/367 people (of which 98 households were relocated centrally and 29 households were relocated mixedly) to take shelter at the old district headquarters and the village cultural house on October 27.

Nearly 200 people from various forces worked together to overcome the flood to evacuate people and ensure their safety at the evacuation site. At the evacuation site, the commune proactively prepared mats, drinking water and necessities for the people.

On the same evening, the local authorities coordinated with the Thanh My Area 2 Defense Command to cook and distribute 260 meals to the displaced households. On the morning of October 28, when the water receded, the commune forces, together with the Thanh My Area 2 Defense Command, brought the people home and worked with them to clean up the mud and spray disinfectant to ensure hygiene and safety.

Quick to help people

Not only stopping at coordinating and cooperating with forces to mobilize, help people evacuate, ensure safety in rain and floods, many associations, organizations and individuals with good hearts also promptly connected and supported necessities and items for people in difficult times.

In Thu Bon commune, early on October 28, the Tam Truong Volunteer Group rowed boats and waded to flooded residential areas while the floodwaters were still high, to give 300 portions of porridge to people in Thu Bon Dong and Thu Bon Tay villages. Ms. Tam Truong, an individual actively involved in local humanitarian work, shared: "Knowing that the water was still high, but with the desire to share and encourage people during natural disasters and floods, we, along with the Youth Union, tried to get up early to cook porridge to give to people to feel warmer in the rain and floods."

Early in the morning of October 28, floodwaters surrounded Quang Nam Regional General Hospital, causing difficulties for patients and their families in daily life and eating. Grasping the situation, the Women's Union of Dien Ban Bac Ward, along with the Bo Mung 1 and Xom Bung Branches, quickly organized the cooking of more than 700 meals, promptly sending them to support and encourage those who were stuck at the hospital during the rainy and flooded days.

In the afternoon of the same day, the Dien Ban Dong Ward Youth Union coordinated with the Volunteer Footsteps Group, the Heart Connection Club and other benefactors to join hands to prepare more than 1,000 meals to support patients and their families. Ms. Doan Thi Tu Trinh, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and Secretary of the Dien Ban Dong Commune Youth Union, said that thanks to some areas not having power outages, the organizations promptly mobilized women and union members to participate in cooking and coordinating to bring meals to hospitals, helping people surrounded by floodwaters.

Not only the local forces, on many social networking platforms, organizations and individuals are also actively preparing necessities and supplies to promptly provide relief to people when the flood waters recede. It is this timely material support and spiritual encouragement that has ignited the flame of solidarity and mutual love, creating motivation to help people in flooded areas firmly overcome the consequences and soon stabilize their lives after the natural disaster.
