Bloomberg tech critic Mark Gurman revealed that Apple is preparing major changes to popular product lines such as MacBook Air, iPad mini and iPad Air, with plans to equip these devices with higher-end screens.
Gurman, citing internal sources, said Apple is testing new versions of each product with OLED screens, a technology that offers richer colors and deeper contrast than current LCD screens.
The iPad mini will likely be the first to get this upgrade, with an OLED version launching as early as 2026.
However, this upgrade is expected to come with a higher price tag. The OLED version of the iPad mini could cost up to $100 more due to the more expensive screen technology.
Gurman sees the move as part of Apple's shift to OLED displays, aimed at giving customers a reason to upgrade their devices.
While Mac and iPad sales are both expected to grow through 2025, the numbers will still be below the peaks set in 2021 and 2022.
In addition to the new display, Bloomberg added that Apple has also been testing a redesigned casing for the iPad mini that is water-resistant, matching the feature on recent iPhone models.
Also in this upgrade, Apple has explored a new speaker system that uses technology related to vibration. This change allows Apple to eliminate speaker holes where water can enter, bringing a different approach to the iPhone's water-resistant design.
