Feast your eyes on the sight of Can Gio sea terns gliding and catching fish

Aquaculture is a key economic sector in agricultural production. Can Gio District continues to implement the plan to implement the Aquaculture Development Strategy and the Resolution on Aquaculture Development to 2030. In the first 9 months of 2024, the total output of the aquaculture industry reached more than 42,300 tons, an increase of 5.5% over the same period in 2023.

In Can Gio district, there are more than 683 fishing vessels simultaneously going offshore, with the spirit of overcoming difficulties, regularly changing fishing gear, upgrading engine capacity, installing seafood detectors, and finding new fishing grounds. Therefore, the catch has increased to more than 12,300 tons in the first 9 months of the year. All fishing vessels strictly comply with the provisions of the law on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Aquaculture in Can Gio has many new models, the production area continues to be maintained at over 4,500 hectares. In addition to traditional intensive, semi-intensive, and improved extensive aquaculture models, along with the development of science and technology, Can Gio district is developing a high-tech shrimp farming model, bringing high economic efficiency, with a harvest output of over 30,000 tons, an increase of 15% over the same period. The high-tech farming model continues to develop with over 300 hectares of high-tech shrimp farming (an increase of 30 hectares compared to the previous year), with an average yield of about 40 tons/ha/year, 6 times higher than the traditional intensive farming model, contributing strongly to the output and value of aquaculture in the district.

To date, the district has 53 agricultural products certified as 3-4 star OCOP products, such as: dried pineapple fish, bird's nest, white-leg shrimp, water coconut honey, etc. At the same time, the district is also building the Can Gio certification brand for brackish water shrimp, oysters and water coconut products. In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee is orienting to build the Can Gio bird's nest brand at an international level.
