The information was revealed by the local newspaper, the Manchester Evening News . According to the report, a list of all U18 players that Man United sent to "transfer partners" has been leaked.
The incident came as a surprise to some players, their representatives, and their relatives, who claimed they were not consulted beforehand.
According to Manchester United's management, they will only receive a symbolic fee from the sale of these players. However, in addition, Manchester United will include a clause entitling them to 20-30% of any future resale fees if the player is transferred again.
The strategy was implemented in the context of MU needing to increase transfer revenue to ensure compliance with PSR – a financial regulation that is tightening for Premier League clubs.
Selling players from the academy is a way to generate a purely "net profit" on paper, as the training costs are almost zero.
For example, Man United included a clause entitling them to 20% of a future transfer fee for an U18 player they sold. If the player is sold for €20 million in the future, Man United would receive €4 million, giving them an additional €12 million to spend without incurring a financial loss.
Due to heavy losses over the past several years, Manchester United's financial situation is now very bad. Not only are they short of money, but even when they do have it, they can't spend freely on player transfers because of pressure from the PSR.
Therefore, Man United is stepping up the sale of players who have come through the academy in order to generate net profit, and it's understandable why they are looking to sell their U18 players.
But that's the theory; Man United fans are outraged by the practice of selling underage players, which they consider utterly despicable.
This policy completely contradicts the principles of training and developing young players for a club with such a rich history as Man United.
Furthermore, selling U18 players (whose salaries are very low) usually doesn't bring in much profit. Therefore, most big clubs will choose to keep them until their contracts expire, even if the players have no further potential for development.
The leak of information about Manchester United's sale of U18 players is considered a major scandal in English football. Many Man United fans are expressing outrage at the owners – the INEOS petrochemical group owned by billionaire Jim Ratcliffe.
For over a year, Mr. Ratcliffe has implemented a drastic cost-cutting policy across the team's operations. Specifically, the British billionaire has laid off more than 200 employees and significantly reduced employee benefits.
Man United even cut the salary of legendary manager Alex Ferguson in his role as honorary advisor.
