Notably, the Vietnamese athletics team – one of the key teams aiming for a gold medal for the Vietnamese Sports Delegation – officially commenced competition. Athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh has not yet competed because she is not participating in the women's 1,500m race at this SEA Games, instead focusing all her efforts on her three strongest events: the 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m, and 10,000m.
The first gold medal for Vietnamese athletics is expected to go to Luong Duc Phuoc – who previously won two silver medals in the 800m and 1,500m at the 32nd SEA Games and is maintaining consistent form.
Besides athletics, Vietnamese sports are anticipating a "shower of gold medals" from swimmers on the second day of competition with a series of speed events, promising new explosive performances. From the men's and women's 50m backstroke to the men's 500m freestyle, women's 200m freestyle, men's 100m breaststroke, and women's 200m individual medley, Vietnamese athletes are all ready.
The highlight of the evening was the men's 4x200m freestyle relay – a "trademark" of Vietnamese swimming and also a measure of the overall strength of the entire swimming nation.
With a strong and well-balanced team, the Vietnamese men's swimming team promises to create fierce competition with Singapore in the relay events. This is also likely to be the first event in which Huy Hoang wins a medal at this year's SEA Games.
Today, the spotlight continues to be on swimmer Pham Thanh Bao – who has won a total of 4 gold medals in breaststroke events in the last two SEA Games. In the 100m breaststroke, Thanh Bao is expected to extend the winning streak for Vietnamese swimming.
Besides strong water sports, canoeing, gymnastics, and martial arts continue to be potential "gold mines" for the Vietnamese Sports Delegation on this competition day.
Today, 53 sets of medals will be awarded at the 33rd SEA Games. The Vietnamese sports delegation has the opportunity to improve its ranking and increase its medal count in the overall standings as a series of strong events enter the competition.
The competitive atmosphere is heating up by the hour, and December 11-12 promises to be another challenging journey – while also opening up new hopes for the Vietnamese Sports Delegation in Thailand.
