'Mean Girls' and 'The Beekeeper' lead North American box office

Mean Girls and The Beekeeper are making waves at the box office. The musical Mean Girls cost just $36 million to produce but grossed $32 million domestically this past weekend. It was originally ordered for Paramount+ streaming, but test screenings convinced the studio to release it in theaters.

Mean Girls also grossed $6.5 million from 16 other countries and territories. The film opens next weekend in the UK and New Zealand, followed by other countries.

It's no surprise that 76% of Mean Girls ticket buyers were female and 60% were under the age of 25. They gave the film a "B+" CinemaScore.

Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. directed Mean Girls , based on the 2004 film. Tina Fey returned to write the script, which has a Gen Z twist but stays true to the original — telling the story of Cady Heron (Angourie Rice), Renee Rapp (Regina George), who return to America from Africa.

Meanwhile, the action film The Beekeeper , directed by David Ayer, opened in second place with $16.8 million last weekend and is estimated to have earned $19.1 million through January 15. The film also opened internationally with $20.4 million in revenue from 49 countries and territories (including Vietnam), bringing its global total to $39.1 million.

Audiences were more receptive to The Beekeeper than critics, earning a "B+" CinemaScore and a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Jason Statham stars as Adam Clay, a former secret service agent who sets out on a quest for revenge after his friend falls for a devastating scam that forces him to commit suicide.

"This is a strong opening for a new action thriller," said David A. Gross, who runs the film consultancy Franchise Entertainment Research. He believes The Beekeeper will have greater appeal overseas because it is "an action thriller and Jason Statham is an established action star worldwide ."

The musical Wonka , starring Timothée Chalamet as an eccentric chocolatier, took third place with $11 million over the four-day weekend. The film was a sweet treat for Warner Bros. and theater owners, grossing $178 million domestically and surpassing $500 million worldwide against a production budget of just $125 million.

" Wonka marks a major box office milestone, cementing Timothee Chalamet's status as a bona fide movie star and demonstrating the power of a film that doesn't fall into the horror or suspense genre," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore.

Sony's comedy Anyone but You continued its climb at the box office, coming in at No. 4 with $8.5 million. The $25 million film, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, rebounded nicely after a slow start in North America. It has so far earned $56.4 million in North America and $78 million worldwide.

Universal and Illumination's animated comedy Migration slipped to fifth place with $6.1 million over the weekend, bringing in an estimated $8.3 million through Jan. 15. The film, released on Christmas Day, grossed $87.8 million in North America and $172 million worldwide.

The Beekeeper (Vietnamese name : Bee Secret Service ) was released in Vietnamese theaters on January 12 and has earned 5.1 billion VND in ticket sales, according to Box Office Vietnam.
