Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has decided to resign to run for the ruling National Reconstruction Movement (Morena) party's presidential election in June 2024. If successful, she will become the first woman to run the country with the second largest economy in Latin America (after Brazil).

In her resignation speech on June 12, Ms. Sheinbaum, 60, affirmed her reputation as a scientist and environmental activist, and said she would continue President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s “transformation of Mexico” in her own style. “I have decided to leave this position on June 16, with the goal of becoming the first woman in the history of Mexico to lead the destiny of the country,” - the first female mayor of the capital Mexico City announced. Ms. Sheinbaum also cited a study released by the National Statistics Agency of Mexico last month showing that more than two-thirds of the country’s people strongly support a woman holding the presidency, thereby emphasizing: “This is the era of women.”

It is known that the Morena leadership has agreed that candidates who want to represent this party should resign to focus on the election. Along with Ms. Sheinbaum, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard also announced his resignation on June 12 to prepare for the race to become the Morena party's presidential candidate. Mr. Ebrard (63 years old) said he would devote himself to another important task, meaning to promote the policies of President Lopez Obrador.

According to the British news agency Reuters, the Morena party has received a lot of support and is expected to win next year's presidential election. The popularity of the party has increased largely due to the personal popularity of President Obrador. However, he cannot run for re-election because Mexican law stipulates that each president can only run the country for one 6-year term.

President Obrador said the Morena party will announce its official presidential candidate on September 6. Currently, Ms. Sheinbaum is the top favorite. Most opinion polls show that Ms. Sheinbaum has a strong advantage over Foreign Minister Ebrard in the race to become the ruling party's presidential candidate.

Sheinbaum, whose grandparents immigrated from Lithuania and Bulgaria, has a doctorate in engineering and served on the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for its efforts to raise public awareness of man-made climate change. As a scientist and believer in scientific research, Sheinbaum is committed to leading Mexico toward sustainable development while focusing on poverty reduction goals. According to Reuters, more than 40% of Mexico's population lives in poverty.

Since taking office as mayor of Mexico City in 2018, Ms. Sheinbaum has been highly regarded for her ability to manage one of the world's largest cities, with a population of more than 9 million people.
