As a rubber tapping worker on a farm, Mr. Lien’s income was enough to make ends meet for his family when his wife was there. However, his wife passed away from rectal cancer more than 2 years ago.
About 3 years ago, Mr. Lien also had a mild stroke but recovered and returned to work normally. However, at the end of 2024, while harvesting rubber latex, Mr. Lien had a stroke and fell into a coma in the rubber garden. As a result, he was paralyzed on the right side of his body and could not take care of himself. The children are still too young, so his biological mother - Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan - is currently living with him to take care of her children and grandchildren. She is also old and weak, and her family is in difficult circumstances, so the life of the 4 mother, children, and grandmother and grandchildren is very difficult.
In the cramped room, the family's breadwinner now lies in one place. After the stroke, Mr. Lien could not speak, he only smiled and nodded, shaking his head when asked, however, he was also not conscious.
For the past 5 months, Ms. Lan has had to stay up late and wake up early to take care of her children and grandchildren. “I am poor so I have nothing to help my children. Now my son is bedridden, so I come here to take care of him and cook for him. Neighbors have compassion and give me a bunch of vegetables and fish to get by. We only have a few cashew trees at home, and the harvest is not much. I have 4 sons, Lien is the eldest son, my younger siblings also work for a living so they can only help take him to the hospital and get acupuncture, but they don’t have money to help,” Ms. Lan shared.
As the main breadwinner and pillar of the family, the support for his children, Mr. Lien is now bedridden. His daughter Trinh Ngoc Anh has been a good and excellent student for many years. Ngoc Anh also suffers from multiple colon polyps. Although she has had surgery to remove them, due to her family's difficult circumstances, Ngoc Anh has not been able to go for a follow-up examination.
Sharing about her dream, Ngoc Anh burst into tears: “I am very scared, my mother has abandoned my sisters and me, now my father is paralyzed and bedridden, I don’t know what to do. Before, I dreamed of going to teacher training school but now I don’t dare to think about it. My father is sick, there is no one to take care of my sisters and me. I have thought about dropping out of school and going to work to take care of my father and my younger brother.”
Representatives of the Association for the Support of the Disabled - Orphans and Poor Patients of Hon Quan district, together with local authorities and the Front Committee of Soc Trao A hamlet visited and encouraged Mr. Lien's family.
His mother died early and his father became ill and bedridden, so now Trinh Ngoc Anh has to take on the role of breadwinner of the family at the age of 16.
Head of Soc Trao A Hamlet, Nguyen Thi Ly, said: In recent years, continuous illness has caused Mr. Lien's family life to fall into a deadlock and difficulties. His wife passed away, leaving behind two young children. Being both a father and a mother, Mr. Lien is now bedridden, his children are still young, and their future is uncertain. We sincerely hope that kind-hearted people will help Mr. Lien have the conditions to treat his illness to recover his health and help his children - children who lost their mother early - to study and become good people.
