From January 22, the Korean steel company Posco will apply a “selected work hours” system of 4 days/week, implemented every other week. The subjects of application are more than 10,000 regular employees throughout the company.
Employees can choose the current working form: 40 hours/week, working from 8 - 17 hours from Monday to Friday for office workers. Or 4-day work week and every other week. Employees only need to ensure working 80 hours in 2 weeks - that is, working 1 hour/day for 2 weeks - to get an extra day off on Friday. As for employees working in shifts at steel factories in Pohang City (North Gyeongsang Province) and Gwangyang City (South Jeolla Province), they still follow the 2-shift, 4-shift system.
A company leader said that the flexible work system allows employees to take advantage of their two-week vacation to recharge and engage in self-development activities. In addition, by implementing a four-day and every-other-week work week system, Posco Group also aims to innovate its corporate culture by establishing a work style that focuses on “autonomy and responsibility.”
In 2018, Posco Group introduced the “selective work hour system,” which allows full-time employees to determine their most productive working hours. Employees can set their monthly working hours and voluntarily set their own commuting hours within an average of 40 hours per week. The key point of the new system is to maintain the general framework of the current “selective work hour system” while expanding the range of working time options for employees.
The Posco Group has implemented many of the above measures to create more work-life balance for employees through improving the work system to create a happy working environment for employees.
