Unexpected floods swept away a series of tourist camps upstream of the O Lau River.

(PLVN) - A sudden flood swept away many tents and tourist service stalls at two community tourism sites Ham Heo and A Don waterfall, Phong My commune, Phong Dien town. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the property damage was huge.

On the afternoon of May 26, speaking with reporters of Phap Luat Viet Nam newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Huu Chung (Chairman of the People's Committee of Phong My commune, Phong Dien town, Hue city) said that at around 6:00 p.m. on May 25, heavy rain from upstream suddenly poured down, causing a flood that lasted for more than an hour. The floodwaters swept away 33 restaurants and 122 stalls along with other equipment of 23 households providing food and beverage services and serving bathers at Ham Heo tourist area (Khe Tran village) and A Don waterfall (Ha Long village).

The rain was so heavy and sudden that people were caught off guard.

At the O Lau upstream tourist site: 18 business households had 108 stalls and 18 huts swept away (average area of ​​each stall is about 8m, roofed with corrugated iron or leaves). At the A Don tourist site: 5 business households lost 12 huts, stalls and many tools and supplies.

“The floodwaters rose and poured in within just 10 minutes, leaving people with no time to react. This is the fifth time since the beginning of 2025 that households here have been affected by sudden floods that swept away their business camps,” Mr. Chung shared.

Mr. Hoang Viet Cuong (Chairman of Phong Dien Town People's Committee) informed that currently, thunderstorms often occur in the area, during which there is a risk of dangerous weather phenomena such as tornadoes, lightning, hail, localized heavy rain and strong gusts of wind. Therefore, the locality needs to proactively respond to complex weather developments, ensuring the safety of the people.
