The funding will be allocated to three strategic areas, including: advanced wastewater management technology, fuel switching capabilities between coal and natural gas, and co-firing systems that combine the two fuels.
This is part of the Trump administration's efforts to reverse the trend of declining coal use in the US. Last month, the US Department of Energy also said it would provide $625 million to expand coal-fired electricity generation.
The number of coal-fired power plants has declined in recent years due to concerns about the impact of fossil fuels on public health and the environment, as well as competition from cheap natural gas.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the move is part of an effort to revive the coal industry after years of pressure from previous administrations to reduce operations, which led to plant closures and higher electricity prices. He stressed that the new policies will help coal plants continue operating and ensure the nation’s energy security with reliable, affordable electricity.
The Trump administration believes coal can help provide the massive amounts of electricity needed to power America's data centers and dominate the artificial intelligence (AI) market.
However, environmental activists say Mr Trump's efforts to revive the coal industry run counter to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
