US Attorney Josh Levy announced charges against the alleged brothel operators: Han Lee, 41, Junmyung Lee, 30, of Massachusetts, and James Lee, 68, of California.
Levy said the investigation is “just beginning” and investigators are gathering more evidence after executing search warrants at locations in Massachusetts, Virginia and California on Wednesday. US authorities also seized the domains of two websites linked to the prostitution ring.
The three defendants were arrested on Wednesday and charged with conspiracy to coerce and entice women to travel to engage in illegal sexual activity. According to charging documents, the defendants, led by Han Lee, used luxury apartment complexes as brothels in Cambridge and Watertown, Massachusetts, as well as Fairfax and Tysons, Virginia.
Prosecutors said the two websites advertised dates with Asian women. Clients were required to undergo a background check that included providing a driver’s license photo and other information. Levy said clients “often paid a monthly fee to become members of this illegal club.”
Prosecutors said clients were charged between $350 and $600, depending on the service, and included politicians , pharmaceutical and technology executives, doctors, military officers, professors, lawyers, business executives, scientists and accountants.
