US announces visa restrictions in Chad

Recently, the US Department of State announced that the US Embassy in Chad has suspended the issuance of most non-immigrant visas for 90 days.

The suspension applies to nonimmigrant tourists , business travelers, students and exchange visitors, as well as most other types of nonimmigrant visas.

Reuters news agency reported that the suspension of routine visa services came after US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on January 20 requiring enhanced security checks for any foreign nationals seeking to enter the US to detect national security threats.

Washington affirmed: "This is not a ban on entry to the United States. Chad citizens are still eligible to apply for visas at other US embassies and consulates around the world ."

Chad's foreign ministry said the US embassy in the country had informed it of the measure and that Chad was looking into the reasons behind it.

Chad is one of more than 40 countries that the Trump administration is considering adding to a list of countries whose citizens would be subject to travel restrictions similar to the travel ban imposed during Trump's first term in 2017-2021.

During his first term, President Trump imposed a travel ban on more than a dozen Muslim-majority countries. The policy faced numerous legal challenges and went through several iterations before being upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018.
