According to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Thang - Head of Training Department of University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), this training program is 5 years, but Ly Thanh Tien graduated from two majors of aviation and maritime in 3.5 years, with a good grade, an unprecedented record at the school.
Study 21 credits, including projects of 2 majors in one semester
While researching careers on YouTube, Ly Thanh Tien watched a video about aircraft maintenance by a former student majoring in aviation engineering at the University of Technology.
"Through those shares, I found this profession interesting and determined that this would be the job I would do in the future, so I decided to choose to study aeronautical engineering and seriously pursue this goal.
I studied for the city-level math competition for gifted students and won third prize. Then I took the competency assessment exam and scored 885 points. This is how I got into the Polytechnic University to study dual majors in marine and aviation engineering," Tien shared.
According to Tien, the most important thing to be able to study 3 semesters ahead is to know how to set goals and plan carefully to achieve those goals.
Since entering school, Tien has determined his goal that he will study as quickly as possible to enter the labor market soon, accumulate work experience and at the same time be able to be financially independent soon.
From the first semesters, he spent a lot of time studying the regulations and prerequisites for registering for courses.
He has built his own study path for subjects that are completely different from the training program, while still ensuring that he meets the school's regulations and registration conditions.
He tried to arrange his study schedule so that he could study as many subjects as possible in one semester, finished all the summer sessions, and achieved his goal of studying for 3 semesters.
Tien said: "Studying like that causes a lot of pressure, because there are a lot of exercises and big assignments that need to be completed in one semester. I have to sacrifice my time to rest and have fun to be able to complete the progress on time. Of all the semesters, semester 2 of year 3 is the most stressful for me.
This semester, I study 21 credits, including 2 major projects: aviation major project and ship major project. The volume of the 2 major projects is really large, I have to do 2 projects in parallel and report the results of the work every week."

Study hard to graduate early and get a job early.
During his studies, Tien did not participate in many extracurricular activities because he had to focus mainly on studying and researching. Due to the dual major program and the goal of graduating early, he had to arrange his time very tightly. However, during the 2-month internship at VAECO, he also had the opportunity to practice many soft skills such as teamwork, time management, technical communication, and problem solving.
Tien's purpose of studying ahead of schedule was to graduate early to start working early, so even though his instructor suggested that he "continue studying because it's a great opportunity", he still wanted to work more. He has now achieved his goal with the position of aircraft maintenance engineer at VietJet.
Sharing about his future plans, Tien added: "In the next 2-3 years, I will focus on perfecting the professional skills of a maintenance technician, especially getting acquainted with many types of aircraft and different maintenance procedures.
I also aim to obtain the necessary certifications to be able to take on more complex tasks. In the long term, I want to stay with VietJet and if given the opportunity, I want to develop to higher positions such as supervisory technician or team leader in the maintenance team."
Arrange study schedule very scientifically, know how to take advantage of summer semesters
According to Associate Professor Dr. Ly Hung Anh - Ly Thanh Tien's instructor, students will study the dual program of aviation - shipping for 5 years.
"Up to now, I have never heard of a student studying 3 semesters ahead of schedule at the University of Technology. Meanwhile, Tien graduated with a dual major with a score of 3.1/4.0, close to excellent (3.2 points). To study 3 semesters ahead, students themselves must arrange their study schedule very scientifically because most majors are only offered once per school year," said Mr. Hung Anh.
Commenting on his student, Mr. Hung Anh added that Tien is always highly proactive, knows how to take advantage of summer semesters to study general subjects and spends a lot of time on specialized subjects.
"Since his second year, Tien proactively came to me to ask for a project. He has the ability to self-study, research using English documents, and find and solve problems very well. Tien also has a research article in the editing process for publication in an international journal.
Besides aircraft maintenance engineering, I am also instructing Tien in calculating and simulating the structure of transportation vehicles in general - which was also the direction of Tien's previous thesis topic - to help him expand his opportunities to enter the labor market," Mr. Hung Anh shared.
