High-performance sports in Quang Tri are experiencing strong development thanks to the high efficiency in selection, training, and coaching, as well as achieving competitive results. In particular, many athletes have been called up to the Vietnamese youth and national teams, competing successfully in regional and international arenas. Quang Tri province has also made a significant mark in successfully hosting many large-scale national and international sports events, thereby contributing to elevating the status of Quang Tri's sports to a new level.

Impressive achievement
Over the years, with focused and targeted investment in sports included in the national competition system, SEA Games, ASIAD, and Olympics, Quang Tri's high-performance sports have achieved many proud results. The province's leading sports such as athletics, rowing, badminton, and wrestling are among the top in the country in terms of achievements, and many athletes have represented the youth and national teams.
Coach Tran Thanh Hiep of the Provincial Athletics Team said that, thanks to the attention of the provincial leaders, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism , and the Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center, the athletics discipline has developed strongly in many aspects, with javelin throwing being particularly outstanding.
The javelin throw team currently has 8 athletes, most notably athlete Nguyen Huu Toan, who won 1 Gold Medal at the 9th National Sports Games in 2022, 1 Gold Medal at the 2023 National Athletics Championship, 1 Gold Medal at the 2023 Ho Chi Minh City Open Athletics Championship..., and is currently a national athletics team member. Quang Tri also boasts another talented athlete, Phan Van Anh Kiet, with outstanding achievements such as winning 1 Gold Medal in javelin throw at the 2023 National Youth Age Group Athletics Championship, 1 Gold Medal at the 2024 Southeast Asian School Games..., and is currently a member of the Vietnamese youth athletics team.
According to Le Do Nhu Hoai, Director of the Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center, high-performance sports are identified as a key and central task in the development orientation of sports in Quang Tri province.
The center has proactively developed investment plans and improved the performance of high-performance sports at national and international competitions; creating appropriate policies and incentives for coaches and athletes. Many coaches have been sent for training and professional development.
Sports facilities have been fundamentally invested in to meet the needs of athletes for training and competition; science is applied in training and nutrition for athletes; good medical care for recovery, injury treatment, political and ideological education, and cultural education are provided for athletes.
The center builds teams to participate in national-level sports competitions, thereby creating the best opportunities for athletes to learn, gain experience, improve their competitive spirit, and help coaches reassess their training methods to make changes and aim for higher achievements.
The Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center currently trains over 100 athletes in 7 disciplines: Rowing, Badminton, Athletics, Wrestling, Karate, Weightlifting, and Swimming. In 2024, the provincial sports teams participated in 31 national high-performance sports competitions, winning 25 gold medals, 32 silver medals, and 35 bronze medals, and in 4 international sports competitions, winning 3 gold medals, 6 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals.
Quang Tri sports are proud to have many outstanding athletes competing in the Vietnamese national team, such as athletes Ho Thi Ly and Le Thi Hien, along with members of the Vietnamese Rowing Team, who won 1 gold and 1 silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games; athlete Vo Thi Kim Chi, who won 1 gold medal at the 2022 Southeast Asian Wrestling Championships; athlete Ha Ngoc Linh Nhi, who won 1 gold medal at the 2023 Asian Junior Rowing Championships... Quang Tri currently possesses a new generation of young athletes such as Nguyen Huu Toan, Phan Van Anh Kiet (athletics), Tran Thi Thu Hang (rowing)... who are striving every day in training to achieve many new impressive results, bringing glory to their hometown's sports.
Hosting the national championship - positive effects
According to Le Minh Tuan, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, over the past five years, Quang Tri has become an attractive destination for many national sports competitions. Leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Sports and Physical Education, and various organizations, units, team leaders, coaches, and athletes highly appreciate the province's sports sector for coordinating and organizing many successful and impressive national and international sports competitions.
The clearest evidence is that in 2024, Quang Tri province successfully hosted and co-organized the National Individual Badminton Championship, the National Youth Indoor Volleyball Championship, the Quang Tri Marathon 2024 - Journey to the Land of Fire, and the "Cycling for Peace" festival... Quang Tri province and Tien Phong Newspaper, along with related units, have completed all preparations to organize the 66th National Marathon and Long Distance Championship of Tien Phong Newspaper in 2025 - "A Triumphal March".
The success in organizing national-level sports competitions affirms that Quang Tri province has the necessary infrastructure, staff, coaches, referees, security forces, medical personnel, etc., to meet the requirements of organizing such events; the people of Quang Tri love sports, are friendly, hospitable, and always wholeheartedly support the athletes in competition.
This has had a positive effect in enhancing Quang Tri's sports standing within the national sports arena; helping the province's sports staff improve their professional skills; allowing people to watch top-level competitions live; and simultaneously providing an opportunity to introduce and promote the beautiful image of Quang Tri's land and people.
According to Phan Van Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in addition to high-performance sports, the province also focuses on investing in the development of mass sports. The province's attention to the socialization of sports has created an initial environment for nurturing and training young talents, giving them the opportunity to realize their dreams of competing professionally.
Talented athletes from Quang Tri province with a strong background have shone in national and international competitions, notably: Truong Van Thai Quy (football); Nguyen Van Nam (volleyball), Nguyen Khanh Ly, Bien Van Anh (athletics)... In addition, many athletes from Quang Tri are members of the Vietnamese national team such as: Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting), Nguyen Anh Duc (football), Le Duc Phat (badminton), Luong Duc Phuoc (athletics), Phan Manh Linh (rowing), Nguyen Chi Khanh (esports)... who have made impressive contributions, helping to raise the status of Vietnamese sports on the international stage.
