In an interview, Mr. Lavrov warned: "Because the current US administration has an extremely anti-Russian attitude, there are no conditions for conducting a strategic dialogue with Washington at this time. Until the US abandons its current anti-Russian policy, we will not negotiate with them on arms control."
Also according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, by February 2026, when the New START Treaty expires, Moscow sees no reason to make any predictions.
"A lot can happen next year. So at this point it would be premature and unreasonable to announce what steps we might take in this sensitive area. We have to wait," Sergey Lavrov said.
Foreign Minister Lavrov reiterated that Russia still adheres to the limits on the number of strategic nuclear weapons under the New START Treaty, despite declaring the treaty null and void.
In February 2023, Russia announced it was suspending its participation in the New START Treaty in response to the world's largest economy announcing it would stop exchanging comprehensive data on weapons systems with Moscow.
The treaty was signed by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his US counterpart Barack Obama in 2010. It entered into force a year later, initially for a period of 10 years, then extended until 2026.
