The S-300PS was considered one of the world's top air defense systems at the time of the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991, making them the main obstacle to Russian advances when full-scale conflict breaks out in February 2022. Photo: @Military TV.

Despite its power, a major limitation of Ukraine's S-300PS air defense network is that it cannot replace components lost in combat or missiles used in operations, as the production of components for the system is heavily concentrated in Russia. Photo: @Military TV.

The main spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, Colonel Yury Ignat, told the London-based Financial Times that the inability to purchase more missiles for the S-300 systems had become a major pressure. Photo: @Military TV.

In addition to Ukraine's S-300s, the Patriot air defense systems delivered to the country were also targeted with Iskander-M ballistic missile systems, and as a result, Ukraine suffered a high rate of combat losses. Photo: @Military TV.

The strikes using Iskander-M ballistic missiles were confirmed by video showing them destroying multiple Patriot batteries, radars and command vehicles, with the first confirmed destruction of a Patriot system on February 23, 2024, while a subsequent strike destroyed another system near the Sergeevka area the following month. New footage from July 2024 confirmed the destruction of two Patriot batteries in the Odessa region. On August 11, three more Patriot batteries and an AN/MPQ-65 radar were reportedly destroyed in Iskander-M strikes. Photo: @MilitaryTV.

Commenting on the Iskander-M's capabilities, which make its attacks extremely difficult to intercept, the official spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, Igor Ignat, said: "The Iskander missile performs evasive maneuvers in the terminal phase, which disables the Patriot's trajectory calculations... In addition, the Iskander can drop decoys capable of deceiving the Patriot missile." Photo: @Military TV.

Iskander-M missile systems have also been used for precision strikes against a variety of other high-value targets, including Ukrainian troop concentrations and warplanes. They have also repeatedly played a key role in the Russian Defense Ministry ’s efforts to target active-duty Western military personnel and contractors operating within Ukraine’s borders. Classified documents leaked from the US Department of Defense in April 2023 show that the Pentagon is increasingly concerned about the increasingly serious shortage of the Ukrainian Air Force's surface-to-air missile network, a depletion of this supply that has forced the US and Western European allies such as Germany and the Netherlands to donate a large number of systems equivalent to the S-300, such as the MIM-104 Patriot system.
