"It is not Russia that threatens Europe, but Europe that threatens Russia," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Pesksov said on November 23 when asked to comment on Czech President Petr Pavel's statement.
Previously, at a conference of representatives of four countries including the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia, Czech President Pavel said that Russia is the biggest threat to Europe as well as NATO countries.
"All our armies are preparing for a potential high-intensity conflict (with Russia)," the Czech leader said.
"We all share the view that helping Ukraine win is in our future interests," he added.
The Czech Republic and Poland were among the strongest supporters of Ukraine when the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in February last year. The Czech Republic provided a variety of weapons to Kiev, including battle tanks. Meanwhile, Poland and Slovakia were the first NATO members to announce they would provide fighter jets to Ukraine.
However, the government of new Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that it would stop providing military aid to Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also repeatedly criticized the European Union's aid policy to Kiev.
The United States and its Western allies have provided Ukraine with continuous aid since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine early last year. On the other hand, these countries have also been cautious to avoid a direct conflict with Moscow.
