According to RT , Anabar Diamonds, a subsidiary of Alrosa Group, discovered a 390.7-carat diamond while panning for diamonds at a diamond mine in the Anabar district of the Sakha Republic (also known as Yakutia) in Russia on the night of September 9th. The diamond was found while washing away diamond-containing sand at night.
The image released by Alrosa shows a diamond with an unusual asymmetrical shape and a yellowish-brown hue. This is considered a truly unique combination of color and shape.
"Experts have not yet conducted detailed studies and assessed the potential and characteristics of the diamond. But there is no doubt that this is a record for our company and the Russian diamond industry," RT quoted Pavel Marinychev, CEO of Alrosa, as saying.
Mr. Marinychev also affirmed that the discovery of the diamond was a great milestone as the company's 2023 mining season came to a close.
Previously, in 2013, Alrosa also extracted a 401-carat diamond.
According to RT , Anabar Diamonds also discovered another diamond at the same mine in Yakutia, measuring 37.7 carats and featuring a classic octahedral shape. Both diamonds have been sent to experts for evaluation.
Alrosa is the world's largest diamond producer, accounting for 30% of the total annual global trade in rough gemstones, valued at $80 billion.
