Russian Navy Commander Admiral Nikolai Evmenov previously told Sputnik that the Belgorod nuclear submarine carrying the Poseidon unmanned vehicle will enter service with the fleet in 2023.
“Tests for Poseidon are planned to take place this summer,” the source said.
Tests will first focus on the Poseidon's nuclear power plant.
According to public sources, Poseidon (formerly known as Status-6, NATO reporting name Kanyon) is a Russian project for a nuclear-powered unmanned underwater vehicle.
In fact, Poseidon is a nuclear torpedo: the main task of this device is to deliver nuclear weapons to the shores of a potential enemy to destroy important coastal facilities of the enemy's economy and cause irreversible damage to the attacked territory by creating a zone of radioactive contamination, tsunamis and other devastating consequences of a nuclear explosion.
Poseidon is 20 meters long, 1.8 meters in diameter and weighs 100 tons.
Poseidon is estimated to have a top speed of 90 km/h, twice as fast as a conventional submarine and much harder to detect.
The torpedo's other capabilities remain a mystery, as Russia has been careful not to reveal too much information.
