Then melody echoes along the Krong Ana river

Living and working in a new homeland, the soulful and profound Then melodies are still an indispensable spiritual "food" in the life of the Tay community in Krong village (Dur Kmal commune, Krong Ana district).

In the traditional costume of the Tay ethnic group, Mr. Nong Van Chuong played the guitar and hummed a part of the song "Majestic Pac Bo". Each rhythmic finger glided on the surface of the guitar and Mr. Chuong's cheerful singing was like a humming stream, taking listeners to visit Lenin stream and Karl Marx mountain in his faraway homeland of Cao Bang.

In 1996, Mr. Chuong brought his wife and children to Krong village to start a business. Whenever he had free time, he and a few friends made a Tinh instrument from a gourd and a fishing line to hum a few Then tunes to ease their homesickness. Over time, the simple sounds of the Tinh instrument combined with the sweet, soulful singing voices connected the children living far away from home every Friday night. The Then sound was the moment when the simple, honest villagers shared their beliefs and hopes for a better life in a new land.

For Ms. Nong Thi Anh (member of the Then-Singing Club - Tinh Dan Buon Krong), playing the instrument and singing the melodies of her homeland has become a pleasure after each hard working day. Wishing more people to know and understand the art of Tinh Dan and Then singing of the Tay people, whenever the commune announced that there would be an art performance, she and the members of the Then-Singing Club - Tinh Dan Buon Krong always arranged time to practice no matter how busy their farming work was.

In order to create conditions for Then singing and Tinh lute lovers in Krong village to have a place to practice, in July 2023, Dur Kmal Commune People's Committee proposed Krong Ana District People's Committee to establish the Then singing - Tinh lute Club of Krong village, consisting of 21 members, the oldest is 60 years old, the youngest is 14 years old. To motivate the club's activities, Krong Ana District supported 21 traditional Tay ethnic uniforms, 5 Tinh lutes, 10 specialized microphones for Tinh lutes and 1 set of musical bells.

Although life is still difficult, club members always arrange time to participate fully in activities.

Then singing has become a traditional beauty of the Tay people in Krong village (Dur Kmal commune, Krong Ana district).

Mr. Truong Xuan Luc, a cultural and social officer of Dur Kmal commune, said that the Then singing - Tinh lute club of Krong village has attracted many people in the commune. In the new rural construction movement, the above model has also contributed to arousing and promoting the cultural and artistic movement in the locality.

Then melodies have gradually taken on a life of their own in the new homeland along the Krong Ana River. In the peaceful space of the fields, the melodious, gentle sound of the instrument resounding every evening is the way for children far from home to preserve the cultural soul of their people.
