(NLĐO) - On the first day that Decree 168/2024 came into effect, traffic police nationwide handled 13,591 violations, imposing fines totaling nearly 28 billion VND.


On January 1st, the Traffic Police Department ( Ministry of Public Security ) reported that in the first day of 2025, there were 51 traffic accidents nationwide, resulting in 28 deaths and 35 injuries. Of these, 50 accidents occurred on roads, causing 27 deaths and 35 injuries. One accident on the railway resulted in a fatality.

On the first day of implementing traffic safety and order enforcement according to Decree 168/2024, the nationwide traffic police force inspected, detected, and handled 13,591 violations; imposed fines (expected) of nearly 28 billion VND; temporarily seized 82 cars, 4,050 motorcycles, and 111 other vehicles; and revoked 2,603 ​​driver's licenses of all types.

Specifically, there were 2,789 cases of drunk driving; 3,105 cases of speeding; 241 cases of overloading; 34 cases of exceeding size limits; and 43 cases of drug-related violations.

Decree 168/2024, effective from January 1, 2025, stipulates that penalties for many traffic violations will increase by tens of times. Accordingly, Decree 168 will strictly punish behaviors that cause traffic accidents and demonstrate a disregard for the law when participating in traffic, with significantly increased fines. For example, the fine for drivers failing to obey traffic signals will be raised from 4-6 million VND to 18-20 million VND.

The penalties for transporting goods in vehicles without proper securing; obstructing or failing to comply with inspection and control requests from law enforcement officers; and failing to obey traffic control signals will be 3 to 30 times higher than currently stipulated. The penalty for opening or leaving vehicle doors open in an unsafe manner, causing traffic accidents, will increase significantly, by 36 to 50 times. For motorcyclists and moped riders violating traffic safety regulations, the penalties will also increase compared to current levels.
