Canada's new prime minister has scheduled visits to two European countries in the coming days, a move that shows Ottawa is looking to shore up alliances in Europe as its relationship with the United States hits an all-time low.
Mr. Mark Carney said that French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had sent him invitations to visit the two countries to strengthen historic relations and discuss trade and security.
The meetings between the new leader and two of Canada's key democratic allies signal that Mark Carney believes his government needs to nurture ties with major European countries that are also targets of US President Donald Trump's trade and defense policies.
The new Prime Minister also hopes to talk to the White House owner at the “appropriate time”. Previously, he expressed a tough stance on the US leader’s trade policies, affirming that he would maintain retaliatory measures until Washington showed goodwill to negotiate fairly.
The former Governor of the Bank of Canada was sworn in on March 14, officially succeeding Justin Trudeau, with a new, slimmed-down cabinet of 24 members (compared to 37 members under his predecessor).
In his first press conference as Prime Minister, Mark Carney said the new government would focus on growing the economy, making life easier and ensuring the country's security.
