Nowadays, with the development of digital technology, modern journalism is not just about words, but images and sounds have become storytelling tools, directly touching the emotions and perceptions of the audience. The continuous development of technology through the Internet and digital platforms has changed the role of revolutionary journalism, from a tool for transmitting information to multimedia and multi-platform.

Film editors - the silent people behind every television product

In the process of producing a television program, in addition to the director, editor, and cameraman, the role of the Montage image processor (film editor) is equally important.

Simply put, film editing is post-production work, using electronic devices to process video and audio on specialized software to cut and combine scenes that the cameramen have previously filmed.

They are the ones who combine raw footage with cutting, editing, effects, etc. techniques to convey the message and ideas that the editor and director want to express. Therefore, in addition to technical knowledge, they also have the ability to be creative and have good artistic thinking, which is shown through the process of telling the story through images and sounds smoothly, coherently and continuously from one scene to another (in many different locations of the film), making the audience feel the story vividly as well as conveying information through images to the audience in the most complete and truthful way.

Ms. Le Thuy Linh (Program Production Department, Long An Radio and Television Newspaper) has 13 years of experience in editing and perfecting reports and television programs. She said: “People who edit reports and television programs not only have to be proficient in editing software and make the most of the software’s features, but it is also important to understand the author’s intentions. Therefore, before editing, I have to read the script carefully and discuss ideas with the author and director to express the correct intentions. In particular, many software must be combined during editing when processing images , sounds, and lights so that the product is good and touches the viewer’s emotions.

In addition, I also have to find my own emotions before starting to create a report by looking at the source images provided by the reporter. By previewing the images like that, I will also have ideas for using special effects, graphics,... to express in the television product."

With the strong development of media today, film editors are required to constantly update their knowledge of film editing software, sound processing software as well as supplement new knowledge of graphics, visual effects, film editing skills, etc. If we consider a television work as a book expressed in images, then the film editor is like the person who makes the layout and edits that book. They make the graphics, titles, effects, and visual effects of the film to attract viewers from the "first look".

With more than 15 years of experience in creating images for television productions, Ms. Truong Thi Xuan Tien (Program Production Department, Long An Radio and Television Newspaper) shared: “In the past, creating images for reports was quite simple, we just needed to choose beautiful images, arrange them on the right axis and frame to create a report with continuous images, attracting viewers, but now it requires more.

In addition to using sound effects, noise, and image processing effects, I also use special effects, create illustrative charts, and select impressive numbers to put into the "visual part" of the work so that each product broadcast on television leaves a strong impression on the audience. Myself and my colleagues in the editing department must always learn and update new editing software to better serve our editing tasks."

In addition, the editor 's task is to identify key words, "expensive" words, from which to process the images to select the most "expensive" moments, edit them into a coherent, attractive story, using editing techniques such as raccord, montage, sequence, ... (period, comma, line break, ...), adjust color, sound to tell the audience the story in the most attractive, effective and reliable way. Combine the "expensive" words in the script with the "expensive" moments of the image to create the appeal of a television product.

If reporters and editors are always known by many people for their active image on the scene, those who work in post-production silently and quietly create the "breath", authenticity, liveliness and appeal in each film.

Many works that won high prizes at national television festivals as well as excellent journalism awards in and outside Long An province all had the great contribution of post-production workers - a job that does not directly tell the story but is the one who completes those stories./.
