(Dan Tri Newspaper) – Despite being visually impaired, with extraordinary willpower, Mr. Le Cuong still excelled and graduated from university with honors. Now, he has become the owner of a broom-making business, supporting many people in similar circumstances.

Following a small alley in Bich Khe village, Trieu Long commune, Trieu Phong district ( Quang Tri province), I found the broom-making facility of Mr. Le Cuong (34 years old). Hearing footsteps, Mr. Cuong, who was weaving brooms, stopped what he was doing, fumbled his way to a nearby wooden table, and greeted me warmly.

Cương recounted that since childhood, he had difficulty seeing things clearly. When he reached secondary school, his eyesight deteriorated further, and his parents took him for an examination, where he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa.

At that time, Cương's family borrowed money to pay for his treatment, but without success. With poor eyesight, Cương faced many difficulties in his daily life and studies.

In 2010, overcoming adversity, Cuong passed the entrance exam to the University of Education, Hue University. After a year, his illness worsened, and Cuong had to drop out of school.

“Nothing is more terrible than losing sight, losing one's career path. Not wanting to live a useless life, depending on family, in 2012, I continued to take the university entrance exam and was admitted to the Literature department at Hue University of Science ,” Cương confided.

At his new school, with the care and love of his teachers and friends, and his own efforts, after four years, Cuong graduated with honors. He thought he had finally achieved his dream, but fate played a cruel trick on the young man. Over time, Cuong's eyesight gradually deteriorated, becoming impaired, and later completely blind.

“I dreamed of becoming a teacher, so I worked very hard to pass the university entrance exam. However, due to circumstances, that dream couldn't come true. I told myself I had to accept what I had and never think negatively. People say that adversity is not a stumbling block, but a motivation to overcome and move forward,” Cương shared.

In 2017, Mr. Cuong joined the Association of the Blind in Trieu Phong district to learn how to make broomsticks, massage, and acupressure.

Thanks to his skillful hands, after 3 months of training and working in Dong Ha city (Quang Tri province), Mr. Cuong's skills gradually improved. In early 2018, he decided to open a broom-making facility at home, inviting several people in similar circumstances to work with him.

Besides creating jobs for people in similar circumstances, Mr. Cuong also inspires them to overcome their feelings of inferiority and strive to rise above adversity.

According to Mr. Cuong, his facility produces 500-600 brooms per month, generating nearly 20 million VND in revenue. The facility employs 5 people, each earning 4-5 million VND per month.

“I have a mobility disability, so I stay indoors and don't dare go outside for fear of affecting others. Since meeting Mr. Cuong, my shyness has disappeared without me even realizing it. I used to think I couldn't work or earn money, but since I started working here, I earn 4 million VND per month,” said Ms. Phan Thi Cuc (50 years old), residing in Trieu Long commune.

Mr. Cuong said that he will expand his production facility and make more types of brooms to meet customer demand. He will continue to welcome people with disabilities and those without jobs, hoping to help them earn extra income to improve their lives and develop economically.

Ms. Vo Thi Thuy, President of the Red Cross Society for People with Disabilities and Social Protection in Trieu Long commune, said that Mr. Cuong is currently the Vice President of the society. Mr. Cuong's broom-making model not only brings economic benefits but also creates jobs for workers in the commune.

According to Ms. Thuy, in the coming time, the Association will propose to the bank to offer preferential loan programs to further support Mr. Cuong in the production and expansion process.
