Khuoi Tao residents hope to soon use the national grid.

Khuoi Tao area (formerly Khuoi Tao village) is located halfway up the mountain, on a winding road, just a few kilometers from the center of Yen Phong commune but isolated. For decades, people here have had to rely on mini generators, solar lamps or rechargeable fans... to serve their daily activities.

Mr. Luong Van La regularly checks the mini generator to have electricity to use.

Mr. Luong Van La, formerly the head of Khuoi Tao village, shared: Because the stream here has little water, we have to store water in a pond, create a slope and then release it to run a mini generator. However, the power source is sometimes strong and sometimes weak, and the machine's bearings have to be replaced several times a year. When the water in the pond is low and the machine cannot run, we have to switch to using headlights and solar lights. Because of this, our family's daily life has encountered many difficulties.

Not only Luong Van La’s family, but most households in the area are in the same situation. The solar lights are only enough to light up a corner of the house, while other electrical appliances are almost unusable.

Mrs. Luong Thi Moi said: Families who can afford it buy solar fans, those who don’t have enough electricity use paper fans. If you want to grind rice, you have to go to the other side of the village. We hope to have national grid electricity soon so that life will be less difficult.

Not far from Mrs. Moi's house is the newly built house of Mrs. Ha Thi Bich, 75 years old. The brand new fan installed on the ceiling has been silent for months because there is no electricity to use. Hanging outside the house are two solar lights that blink, storing a little bit of electricity for use at night. Cooking must also be done in the afternoon, in case the solar lights run out of power. Mrs. Bich said: I really wish there was national electricity because there is too little water to run the machine, one house can still use a generator, several houses sharing the house have too little electricity.

Looking along the route to the center of Khuoi Tao, we saw many electric poles that had been erected, but were bare. Many poles had ceramic tiles and electrical cabinets installed, but no wires had been connected.

Talking to us, Mr. Chu Van Trieu, Chairman of Yen Phong Commune People's Committee said: After operating the 2-level local government, the commune has received from the previous district level the project of constructing the power line to Khuoi Tao area. We have also asked the contractor to speed up the construction progress and turn on the power soon to serve the people's lives. According to the plan, the project will be completed in December 2025.

The national grid not only brings light, but also opens up opportunities for economic development, learning, access to information and improving life. For the people of Khuoi Tao area, the biggest wish at this time is to use the national grid to change their lives.
