The Korean Football Association (KFA)'s (Korean Football Association's) National Team Strengthening Committee has recommended the dismissal of coach Jurgen Klinsmann yesterday (February 15). However, the German coach did not know who these people were, even though he was present at the meeting.
" I asked coach Klinsmann if he knew about the National Team Strengthening Committee, but he said he didn't. He said if he knew about this department, he would have communicated more and received more help. Everyone in the meeting was shocked and silent for a moment ," a member of the committee revealed.
The meeting of the National Team Strengthening Committee aims to evaluate the performance of the Korean team at the 2023 Asian Cup and the responsibility of coach Jurgen Klinsmann in managing and directing the players.
After the meeting, members proposed that the KFA fire the German coach. Reports from the professional council showed that coach Klinsmann lacked leadership capacity.
Coach Klinsmann did not understand the internal conflict, and seemed to ignore opinions about his work attitude when he spent little time in Korea. He was mainly in the US and worked remotely. This made the Korean public doubt the effectiveness of the work that Mr. Klinsmann did.
Coach Klinsmann did not know about the existence of the KFA professional council.
Another member of the KFA's professional council asked all members to resign. This member said that the professional council's mark was too faint, contributing to the impact on the Korean team's performance at the 2023 Asian Cup.
Sharing with the media later, this person emphasized: " In fact, up to now, the National Team Strengthening Committee has not yet promoted much capacity. The committee should be a place for former players to gather and give professional advice, but it is left to the federation to decide. This is not effective."
The chairman of the committee is Mr. Michael Mueller, who is responsible for receiving feedback from the members. He is the first foreigner to hold this position. Previously, Coach Park Hang Seo considered Mr. Mueller unsuitable because foreign experts do not fully understand the situation of Korean football.
" President Mueller should have supervised coach Klinsmann but did nothing. He should have been the intermediary to bring the opinions of the Korean public to the coach. However, there was no communication here.
Former president Lee Yong-soo analyzed public opinion with former coach Guus Hiddink and played a good intermediary role, but the current president does not understand that desire. I think it is better for a Korean with management experience and English to do this job, " a council member commented.
On the morning of February 16, the Korean Football Association held a meeting to make a decision with coach Jurgen Klinsmann. The German coach signed a contract with the KFA from March 2023 and is valid until the end of the 2026 World Cup.
