Nguyen Thi Oanh continued her winning streak in the 5,000m race with a time of 16 minutes 27 seconds 14, while her younger teammate Le Thi Tuyet finished second. The golden girl of Vietnamese athletics equaled Nguyen Thi Huyen's record of 13 gold medals.
In the 5,000m race, the two Vietnamese athletes dominated from the start, easily leaving their rivals far behind. Notably, Le Thi Tuyet led for most of the time, but Nguyen Thi Oanh demonstrated her class by surging ahead in the final 600m and overtaking her younger teammate to win the gold medal.
With her consistent performance, Nguyen Thi Oanh is expected to win both remaining gold medals in the 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase events at this year's SEA Games. Notably, she will not be participating in the 1,500m event at this SEA Games.
Nguyen Thi Oanh was born in 1995 in Bac Giang (now Bac Ninh). Before the 33rd SEA Games, she had won 12 gold medals in 4 consecutive Games (from 29 to 32). Nguyen Thi Oanh also had no rivals in Southeast Asia, winning gold medals in the 1,500m, 5,000m, and 3,000m steeplechase events in the last 3 SEA Games.
In Vietnamese athletics alone, Nguyen Thi Oanh holds 5 national records, including the 5,000m (15 minutes 46.11 seconds), 10,000m (33 minutes 13.23 seconds), 3,000m steeplechase (9 minutes 43.83 seconds), half marathon (21 km, 1 hour 13 minutes 22 seconds), and full marathon (42.195 km, 2 hours 39 minutes 49 seconds).
At the 2025 National Athletics Championships held in Da Nang in mid-August, the runner born in 1995 had little difficulty achieving a hat-trick of gold medals in the 1,500m, 5,000m, and 3,000m steeplechase events.
