Chris Froome had an unfortunate accident during training earlier this week, crashing into a curb and a traffic sign near Toulon, France, at high speed.
The serious consequences left Chris Froome with a collapsed lung, four broken ribs and a broken bone in his back. He was immediately taken to the Sainte Anne Military Hospital Toulon - the region's most advanced trauma center specializing in thoracic surgery.
Luckily, he was still conscious and able to communicate while being rushed to the emergency room. It seemed that everything stopped there, but recently Michelle Froome - wife of the 40-year-old champion - said that her husband's injury was more serious than initially diagnosed.
Speaking to The Times, Michelle Froome said her husband suffered a ruptured pericardium, a tear in the protective sac surrounding the heart. This condition results from chest trauma and often occurs in traffic accidents.
"It's obviously much more serious than a fracture," the British athlete's wife told CNN. "He's fine but he'll have a long recovery. He won't be able to cycle for a while."
Chris Froome also broke his femur in another serious training crash in 2019. He was out of action for nine months and has not won a race since.
Chris Froome is one of the most successful athletes in cycling. He won the Tour de France for the first time in 2013, before going on to win consecutive titles in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
