Ho Chi Minh City - The Buyo project, which provides 100% naturally sourced bioplastics, won the 2023 National Innovation Startup Talent Search award with a prize of 100 million VND.
The final round of the National Innovation Startup Talent Search Competition took place on the morning of November 24th, with 10 outstanding project teams selected from 500 applications. The competition was organized by the Department of Market Development and Science and Technology Enterprises ( Ministry of Science and Technology ) in collaboration with units within the innovation startup ecosystem. The event was part of the National Innovation Startup Festival (Techfest) 2023.
The winning project of the competition, Buyo, provides natural bioplastics from organic waste materials in industry and agriculture using technology invented by the research team. These bioplastics are capable of completely decomposing in the natural environment, are safe for health, and reduce carbon emissions.

Second prize in the competition went to the AirXCarbon project, which uses agricultural, industrial, and forestry waste to create bioplastic pellets. The research team refined the production process to maximize carbon sequestration, ensuring the biomaterial is carbon-negative and cost-competitive with petroleum-based plastics.
Third prize went to the Cenegry project with its energy storage technology based on flow-through battery technology.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Tran Van Tung, Standing Member of the Steering Committee of Project 844 and former Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, congratulated and highly appreciated the outstanding projects that reached the finals and won awards in the competition. He hoped that the projects would continue to refine their solutions and business models to reach a higher level when participating in international competitions. From the perspective of the management agency, Mr. Tung pledged to continue creating favorable conditions and supporting startup projects, connecting domestic and foreign investors to help startups develop domestic and international markets, providing green and sustainable development solutions and addressing social issues.
The National Innovation Startup Talent Search competition aims to find innovative solutions from technology companies, attracting experts, intellectuals, and entrepreneurs from both within and outside the country to spark creative thinking and contribute to promoting the innovation startup ecosystem.
