" SOFT ABILITIES" ARE ADVANTAGES

The job of a film producer is quite hard and is usually undertaken by men, because this is the "brain" position that arranges a lot of work, like a "general manager" of the film crew. According to producer Dinh Ngoc Diep, the job of a film producer in general is quite broad, having to handle the work of many groups combined, with different large and small, main and secondary positions. "Diep's role is often called Executive Producer, but Diep alone cannot handle the heavy workload. In fact, a production team will consist of dozens of members, who are the director's right-hand men. You have deep professional skills, from budget management, to planning organization or human resource management to support Diep...", Dinh Ngoc Diep said.

Working with her husband, director Victor Vu, in 7 film projects as a producer, Dinh Ngoc Diep believes that for women, working in this position has many advantages. "Women's strength is being an "emotional expert" while men still have to try to control them to some extent. Women are considered "masters of spirituality and inner self" so in terms of creativity, it is easier to convey messages smoothly. Women also bring profits to the project, where reasonable spending decisions will replace rigid principles in the marketplace," the producer emphasized.

According to Dinh Ngoc Diep, female film producers are emotional traders. They contribute to the success of the project with all their heart and discipline. Besides, the subtlety in emotions and observations helps identify "small but important things", from the way of choosing actors, costumes, details in the scene... to giving comments on the film's content to touch the hearts of viewers, making the film more profound. "If female producers contribute to creativity, it will help the drama line. Diep often jokes with Victor Vu: "If there is a cheesy part, let me do it!". Sometimes it's just a line of dialogue, but clearly when it's on film, the audience is moved to tears. Because more than anyone else, women understand female psychology better than men. Patience and gentleness help remove all blockages, whether in the organization or creation stages. They are subtle in choosing projects, connecting talented people and selling works to the majority," she added.

As a companion of Vo Thanh Hoa in several hundred billion film projects such as Linh Mieu: Quy Nhap Trang, Quy Cau... producer Mai Bao Ngoc also believes that women doing this job will help the connection to be smoother because they can take advantage of "soft skills". Accordingly, the producer is the one who connects all the stages in a project, from planning, finding investment sources, selecting crew, supervising production, to distribution strategy. This job requires smooth coordination between many departments, as well as the ability to manage finances, control progress and handle arising problems. Mai Bao Ngoc emphasized: "Especially, with folk horror films, producers also need to be sensitive in building stories, ensuring that cultural and spiritual elements are expressed skillfully, not causing offense but still attractive enough to the audience". She added: "Being a film producer is a challenging job, requiring perseverance, determination and the ability to handle high pressure. As a woman in this industry, Ngoc also has certain advantages, such as sophistication, sensitivity in the way she perceives problems, and the ability to balance art and business."

N MANY "BRAIN-TREATING" CHALLENGES

In the female production world, Minh Ha is a "formidable" name behind the success of the Lat Mat series directed by Ly Hai. The male director once commented that Minh Ha is "the best producer" and takes care of every step in the film project so that her husband can focus on his directing work.

Talking about the challenges of being a producer, Minh Ha said that she has to "think hard" to make sure the film recovers its capital and continues to work on other projects. To achieve this, the producer has to balance a lot. "We have to invest appropriately to recover the capital, not to mention making a profit. We have to avoid losses to continue investing in the next project while ensuring the quality of the product. This is something that the producer has to calculate very carefully, be decisive and women often have the strength in calculating properly," Minh Ha shared.

As for Dinh Ngoc Diep, the biggest challenge for a producer is having to work in a production team that is mostly male. This requires women to be brave and empathetic. "In a production team of 10 people, 8 are men. A small woman holding a "head" position in front of men will face many barriers and challenges. At this time, female producers must make a lot of effort to be heard and recognized," she expressed.

Talking more about the challenges of being a producer, both Mai Bao Ngoc and Dinh Ngoc Diep said that women in this profession have to travel a lot and spend more time on work, so their psychology, family, and emotions are easily disturbed. "They have to be strong, tough, courageous, and make appropriate arrangements. I am lucky to have a husband who is also my companion. Sometimes we both co-produce a film project, so it is easy to understand and share work with each other," Mai Bao Ngoc added.

Sharing about the strengths of a woman working as a film producer, director Vo Thanh Hoa said that this job is very hard, however, if women can withstand the "heat", they will do better than men because they are always gentle in handling problems, especially financial issues, and know how to be "hard and soft" at the right time in managing work. "Like me, in every film project, having Ngoc (Mai Bao Ngoc) as a financial expert makes me feel very secure. Her "femininity" helps me a lot in the content and media handling stages...", the male director acknowledged.
