If in the past, musicians in Hue often had to go to Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City to record professionally, now, right in the heart of the city, there are many options. Names like Zoe Studio, Spyke Records, Nyan Music or Drum House Studio... are gradually creating a small network, serving all genres, from rock, pop, ballad to rap, hip hop.
Some new recording studios that have appeared in recent years, such as Zoe Studio or Spyke Records, are run by young people who are playing music and performing, so they understand the needs of the Hue music industry. “I opened the recording studio because my band needed a suitable place to practice and record. Rock is a rather picky genre, not every room can withstand the sound intensity and playing style of the group, so we decided to create our own space for this community,” said Hoang Tien Nghia, owner of Zoe Studio.
Zoe Studio is currently one of the familiar addresses for young rock bands. In addition to recording, this place also supports mixing and processing sound, filming MVs, and even helps release products to online platforms. “Most of our customers are students. During peak times, the room is almost fully booked from morning to night,” said Mr. Hoang Tien Hieu, Mr. Nghia’s younger brother.
That atmosphere reflects the strong vitality of Hue's youth music community, where young people are still diligently practicing, recording, composing and making music for themselves. They can start with just a few cover songs, a few self-recorded demos, then gradually learn how to use equipment, work with sound engineers, and find their own identity.
Not only rock bands, rap and hip hop in Hue are also developing strongly. Spyke Records, founded by Vo Nguyen Hung, is one of the familiar destinations for young rappers. Hung said that since high school, he and his friends have been passionate about music and have cherished the idea of opening a place where "rap and hip hop enthusiasts in Hue can meet, exchange and create".
“In Hue, not everyone has the conditions to pursue music professionally. I want Spyke to become a place where talented people can be supported and have a decent space to make music,” Hung said. In addition to recording, Spyke also produces full packages, mixes music, mixes and processes sound, and even guides beginners. He added: “The market in Hue is small, the budget is limited, but in return, everyone is close and supports each other. At Spyke, customers and studio owners often become friends, work together on products, and grow up with the profession.”
In a space of a few dozen square meters, musicians in Hue are still working hard on rhythm, on instruments, and on voices. Some bands spend three or four sessions to complete a recording; some young rappers stay up all night to capture the right “moment” for a song.
Tran Quoc Trung, guitarist of The Clocks, shared: “Recording in a professional studio helps us feel more inspired, and the product is much more polished than recording at home. Although cost is still an obstacle, fortunately, studios in Hue always support young bands, treating us as companions rather than customers.” Behind each recording are hours of hard work, sometimes repeating a riff or a rap line dozens of times to achieve the best sound. But for young people in Hue, it is not just work, but the joy of living with music.
Besides young names like Zoe or Spyke, Hue still has many long-standing recording studios such as Thai Thinh Studio, Nyan Music, Drum House Studio..., places that have accompanied local artists and singers for many years. Each studio has its own strengths: one focuses on light music, one serves orchestras, one specializes in arranging and recording Hue-style music. All coexist, complement each other, contributing to the formation of a colorful picture of Hue music, contributing to Hue music having more new, diverse and lively voices.
Rock, indie, rap or R&B, genres that were once unfamiliar to the ancient capital, now have their own place, made with the seriousness and enthusiasm of the new generation. Although the scale is still small and the market is narrow, the most valuable thing that recording studios bring is the space for passion to be expressed. There, music is not just a profession, but a way for young people to find themselves.
As Vo Nguyen Hung shared: “What makes me happiest is to live and contribute to music. As long as there is passion, one day you will receive the ripe fruit. Perhaps the same is true for many musicians in Hue who quietly continue their path, without noise, without jostling, just to stay with music. And as long as there are small rooms in this city that are lit until late at night, Hue music will continue to resonate, quietly, persistently and full of vitality.
