Many mass varieties hold the "top" in productivity
In the mass-produced variety group, familiar names such as Khang Dan 18, Nep 98, Xuan Mai… continue to be trusted and chosen by farmers. These varieties have affirmed their position thanks to the stability of output and rice quality that meets market requirements.
In the spring crop of 2025, Kim Song Truong commune (Can Loc district) planted about 300 hectares of Nep 98 variety (nearly 1/3 of the commune's rice area), with an estimated yield of 3.3 quintals/sao. People were even more excited when rice prices reached high levels, ranging from 5,700 - 5,900 VND/kg.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (Phuc Yen village, Kim Song Truong, Can Loc) said: “This year, my family produces 1.5 hectares of rice fields, mostly Nep 98. This variety holds the leading position in productivity in the commune, 0.2 - 0.3 quintals/sao higher than other varieties. Whatever I harvest, traders buy.”
According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Loc district, which is a key area for rice production, in the spring crop of 2025, the district will mainly structure key varieties according to the province's orientation such as Nep 98, VNR20, Bac Thinh, Ha Phat 3... With synchronous technical support and relatively favorable weather conditions, the average yield of the whole district reached over 3.2 quintals/sao, the highest ever.

In localities such as Thach Ha, Cam Xuyen, Ky Anh districts, rice varieties such as Khang Dan 18, Xuan Mai... dominate in terms of area and production efficiency. On a field of more than 30 hectares in Nam Yen village (Nam Phuc Thang commune, Cam Xuyen), people entered the harvest season with an excited spirit. Mr. Tran Van Hinh (Nam Yen village) shared: "After converting the land, we mainly planted Khang Dan 18. This is a high-yielding rice variety, favored by the market, so traders buy it right at the field."
According to Mr. Le Ngoc Ha - Vice Chairman of Cam Xuyen District People's Committee, in recent times, the locality has promoted restructuring production towards streamlining and efficiency. The district prioritizes the use of some high-quality rice varieties such as Xuan Mai, Khang Dan 18, TH3-3, Bac Thinh, VNR20... on large fields after the process of land conversion and accumulation. Thanks to the reasonable selection of varieties combined with high intensive farming level, this year's spring crop of Cam Xuyen continues to achieve comprehensive success, with both productivity and quality exceeding the set targets.

Continue testing potential varieties
In addition to the mass varieties that have been included in the structure, Ha Tinh continues to test a number of new varieties that have the potential to be included in the main structure in the coming time. Among them, the varieties TBR97, Huong Binh, VNR10, etc. have received much attention thanks to their outstanding efficiency in this spring crop.
In Tung Loc commune (Can Loc district), the TBR97 variety was highly evaluated in terms of both growth and productivity after testing. Mr. Nguyen Van Phuoc (Tay Huong village, Tung Loc commune, Can Loc) said: "After 2 crops, I found that the plants grew well and had few pests and diseases. My family harvested 3.2 quintals/sao, higher than some other varieties in the locality".
According to Mr. Tran Van Hanh - an officer in charge of Thai Binh Seed Group Joint Stock Company in Ha Tinh, in the experimental areas, TBR97 rice variety is easy to cultivate, has strong tillering, and a short growth cycle. The plant has an average height, rarely falls over, and is resistant to pests and diseases. In addition, the milling rate is high, the rice is soft, sticky, and has a light aroma.

In Nghi Xuan district, the locality continues to expand the area of some promising varieties such as QP-5, VNR10, etc. Mr. Nguyen Trong Thang - Director of Lam Son Agricultural and Service Cooperative (Xuan Hong commune, Nghi Xuan) said: "This is the 5th crop we have put the QP-5 variety into production on an area of nearly 20 hectares. This variety has few pests and diseases, has a yield of more than 3 quintals/sao, suitable for land conditions".
According to Mr. Le Anh Duc - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Nghi Xuan district, the whole district will cultivate 3,295 hectares of rice in the spring crop of 2025 with an expected average yield of 56 quintals/ha. The new rice varieties are assessed to be relatively suitable for the climate, soil, cultivation conditions, and have good resistance to pests and diseases. This is the basis for selection into the district's production structure, replacing the current low-yield pure rice varieties, helping to improve efficiency and income for farmers.

From the practice of this year's spring crop, it can be seen that Ha Tinh is gradually proactively building a production structure suitable for each ecological region. Thanks to that, key varieties such as Nep 98, Khang Dan 18, Xuan Mai, Nhi Uu 838, TH3-5, Thai Xuyen 111, ... continue to promote stable efficiency. At the same time, many new varieties such as TBR97, VNR10, QP-5, Huong Binh, ... have initially affirmed their advantages in terms of yield, quality and have the ability to expand acreage in the following crops.
In the coming time, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will continue to evaluate, select and add some new varieties to the main variety set for the province. However, the selection must also be done very carefully and systematically, especially in the context of increasingly complex weather conditions and climate change that greatly affects agricultural production.
