At the 33rd SEA Games, Vietnamese fans witnessed extraordinary stories of resilience among middle-aged athletes, with many athletes in their 50s consistently shining and winning medals.
One of the most touching stories is that of 51-year-old athlete Nguyen Van Dung, who won the gold medal in the men's individual shooting petanque event. This veteran's journey to victory at the 33rd SEA Games spanned 20 years, across seven SEA Games.
Having participated in so many SEA Games, it wasn't until now that Mr. Nguyen Van Dung finally fulfilled his dream of winning a gold medal. Although not a particularly prominent name in Vietnamese sports , the story of this man, who is approaching old age, winning a SEA Games gold medal immediately created a huge ripple effect.
In maruk chess (a variant of chess with local characteristics), Grandmaster Dao Thien Hai also dominated the SEA Games despite being over 47 years old.
Throughout his nearly 30-year career, the chess player from Sa Dec has brought countless glory to the Vietnamese chess team. And at almost 50 years old, he is still diligently pursuing his SEA Games goals, even though the competition is only a local chess event.
