Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023: Nanochemistry Brings Medical Breakthrough

Người Lao ĐộngNgười Lao Động04/10/2023

According to the Nobel Assembly, three scientists Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov were awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery and development of quantum dots, a breakthrough form of nanocrystals.

These tiny particles have unique properties, which are what transmit light from TV screens and LEDs. They also catalyze chemical reactions, and their visible light can illuminate tumor tissue for surgeons.

Professor Moungi G. Bawendi is currently working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Professor Louis E. Brus is working at Columbia University, Professor Alexei I. Ekimov is the former Chief Scientific Officer of Nanocrystals Technology Company. All three units are in the US.

According to the Nobel Prize website, this is the 115th Nobel Prize in Chemistry to be awarded since 1901. Like the Nobel Prize in Physics, most of the scientists who have won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry have been men. Only 8 women have been honored with this prize.

The remaining Nobel Prizes for 2023, including the Nobel Prizes in Literature, Peace and Economics, are expected to be announced on October 5, 6 and 9, respectively.

Previously on October 2, the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine honored two scientists Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissma from the University of Pennsylvania (USA).

On October 3, three quantum physicists Anne L'Huillier (Lund University - Sweden), Ferenc Krausz (Max-Planck Institute for Quantum Optics - Germany) and Pierre Agostini (Ohio State University - USA) were jointly named for the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Each prize will be worth 11 million SEK (Swedish krona, equivalent to more than 986,000 USD), expected to be awarded with a certificate and medal on December 10, the anniversary of founder Alfred Nobel's death.

The Nobel Prizes in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and Economics will be awarded in Stockholm, Sweden; the Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in Oslo, Norway.
