Farmers in Tung Chau commune are heading to the fields to harvest summer-autumn beans.

Ms. Phan Thi Huong's family in Thinh Kim village, Tung Chau commune, cultivated 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of summer-autumn mung beans this year. Thanks to the three-tiered mung bean variety, the pods per plant are relatively abundant, the seeds are firm, and the second harvest is already underway, with an estimated yield of 80 kg per sao.

"Every year, my family grows one rice crop and one bean crop, never leaving any land fallow. Each kilogram of early-season summer beans sells for 24,000 VND. After harvesting and cleaning the beans, traders come to our house to buy them. With 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of beans, my family earns nearly 6 million VND," said Ms. Phan Thi Huong.

In the 2023 summer-autumn crop season, Tung Chau commune planted 120 hectares of beans. Although the weather was dry from the beginning of the season, the summer-autumn bean yield was lower than last year, but compared to previous years, it was still considered a good harvest. This is because the percentage of pods per plant was high, the seeds were firm, there were few pests and diseases, and prices were stable, so farmers did not have to worry about the market for their produce.

After harvesting, traders come directly to the farmers' homes to buy the beans at a price of 24,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Dau Thanh Tinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tung Chau commune, said: "The locality always pays attention to directing the closed-loop production of dryland crops in the summer-autumn season, especially beans. This is because farmers have long had experience in intensive cultivation of this crop, and it yields high economic efficiency. Right from the beginning of the season, we issued a plan and disseminated information to all villages. To ensure a successful summer-autumn production, the locality has established cooperatives for purchasing and processing agricultural products to stabilize the output for farmers."

At this time, farmers in Bui La Nhan commune are also in the middle of harvesting summer-autumn beans. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien (Hoa Dinh village) said: "My family cultivates more than 1 sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of summer-autumn beans, using the black bean variety with green centers. This variety yields high productivity and fetches a high price. By this time, I've almost finished harvesting, with an estimated yield of 60 kg per sao."

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Linh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Bui La Nhan commune, this year many concentrated production areas have been formed, with a minimum area of 10 hectares each. This has created favorable conditions for farmers to introduce mechanization into land preparation. The process of caring for crops and controlling pests and diseases has also become easier.

In the 2023 summer-autumn crop season, Bui La Nhan commune planted 90 hectares of beans.

This year, Duc Tho district planted 780 hectares of summer-autumn mung beans. Due to the drought at the beginning of the season, followed by heavy rains after the flowering period, not only in the communes outside the dike but also in many other localities, the mung bean yield was lower than the previous season, reaching only 1.2 tons/hectare. To promote production development and increase the economic value per unit of cultivated area, Tung Chau commune is currently developing its summer-autumn mung bean product as an OCOP (One Commune One Product) product.
