Brazilian actress sentenced to prison because of Neymar

Actress Luana Piovani was sentenced to four months and 15 days in prison for defaming footballer Neymar, in connection with social media posts she made in May and June 2024.

On October 17, the São Paulo State Court of Justice issued a verdict, convicting actress Piovani for insulting Neymar Jr. According to Ole , the incident stemmed from a series of posts on Piovani's Instagram, in which she used strong language to criticize Neymar.

Specifically, the actress asserted that Neymar is "a bad example" and "a person who is not worthy of being a father and a man." Piovani's statements stemmed from a conflict between her and Neymar over a controversial real estate project.

Judge Rodrigo César Müller Valente found Piovani's insulting behavior to be aggravating, as the posts were widely circulated on the internet, seriously damaging Neymar's reputation.

Piovani's legal representative, lawyer Augusto de Arruda Botelho, expressed disagreement with the court's conclusion and said he would file an appeal. Piovani's case has created a wave of debate in Brazilian public opinion.

Neymar has long been the center of attention in Brazil, and last month he took legal action after a local journalist accused him of alcoholism.

In a video posted on the Futeboteco channel, journalist Rodolfo Gomes claimed that Neymar is “addicted to whisky mixed with energy drinks, smokes shisha and only goes to bed at 4-5 am”.

Neymar's agency called the statements "irresponsible, slanderous, defamatory and untrue." They said they were taking legal action to "hold those involved civilly and criminally responsible."
