Images of flood damage in Lao Cai made Quynh Anh want to do something meaningful.

Relief backpacks - safe and convenient during the flood season

Nguyen Quynh Anh, a 12th grade student of English 2 at Lao Cai High School for the Gifted, is a petite but determined girl. Born in a land often heavily affected by natural disasters, Quynh Anh has witnessed many times the loss and pain brought by fierce floods.

Images of villages being washed away, the cries of people losing loved ones and homes, and the fear every time heavy rains continued made Quynh Anh unable to sit still.

"I always wonder what I can do to help the people here, especially the children in the highlands, so that everyone can be safer during the flood season" - Quynh Anh shared.

From there, an inspiring journey began when the young girl was determined to realize her dream of creating practical relief solutions to help people in the highlands better cope with natural disasters.

Understanding that in emergency situations, people need practical support tools, Quynh Anh spent a lot of time conducting field surveys in areas frequently affected by natural disasters, especially the highland district of Si Ma Cai (old). She went to each village and hamlet to talk with hundreds of local people to understand their needs and difficulties when facing flash floods.

With the help of engineers and design experts, Quynh Anh's backpack idea was completed.

From the collected data, Quynh Anh developed the idea of a special rescue backpack that is both convenient and safe. This backpack weighs 2.1 kg, is designed to be waterproof, has an integrated buoy that can withstand loads of up to 120 kg. The product not only ensures aesthetics but also meets functional requirements in emergency situations.

With the help of engineers and design experts, Quynh Anh's backpack idea was completed. Quynh Anh also organized a community propaganda program and used social networks to guide the use of RESCU PACK - the name of the relief backpack. This program directly supported more than 1,200 people, including children, women and the elderly, while raising awareness about disaster prevention in the community.

In addition, Quynh Anh and the research team have organized many field tests in flood-prone areas to test the durability and effectiveness of the product. As a result, the rescue backpack has proven to be an effective solution in supporting people to escape in harsh conditions. "

The backpack not only helps people stay safer during the flood season but also helps me fulfill my small dream of bringing peace of mind to people in difficult highland areas" - Quynh Anh confided.

Online flood prevention application - Technology helps people in mountainous areas cope with natural disasters

Not stopping at the relief backpack, Quynh Anh continues to develop another highly applicable project, the “ Online Flood and Storm Prevention Handbook”. This is a mobile application designed specifically for people in the highlands, helping them proactively respond to natural disasters with useful information and instructions.

As the conceptualizer and developer of the application, Quynh Anh built the main features including: interactive flood evacuation instructions, first aid videos , local emergency contacts and a real-time flood warning system integrated with meteorological data. The application interface is optimized to be friendly to the elderly and ethnic minorities. In particular, with offline mode, the application still works even without an internet connection, suitable for remote areas.

To ensure practicality, Quynh Anh and her team edited the content based on documents from the Ministry of Agriculture & Environment and relief organizations, and surveyed 200 households in Lao Cai to adjust the language and features to best suit.

This application quickly received attention from the community when Quynh Anh cooperated with the "Youth for the Community" Club to organize application introduction sessions, not only helping people get closer to technology but also raising awareness of natural disaster prevention.

In addition, Quynh Anh also initiated the establishment of a network of 10 schools in Lao Cai province (including 3 primary schools, 3 secondary schools and 4 high schools). Here, she organized direct training sessions with the participation of more than 1,000 students and teachers, including contents such as: instructions on using applications, first aid skills and simulation of natural disaster response situations.

" This application not only helps people prepare better for natural disasters but is also an effective educational tool, helping them raise awareness about protecting themselves during the flood season" - Quynh Anh shared.

Quynh Anh’s two projects, the relief backpack and the online flood prevention application, have received positive reception from the community. These initiatives not only bring safety during natural disasters but also create trust and hope for people in the highlands.

Quynh Anh's meaningful activities inspire many young people.

Sharing her motivation, Quynh Anh said: “The figures of damage after each flood season make me worry. I want to turn the knowledge I have learned into concrete actions so that every highland resident can protect themselves and their loved ones. I hope that these small initiatives will help the highland people overcome difficulties."

Quynh Anh’s journey to conquer knowledge and contribute to the community has just begun, but what she has done is the clearest proof of the power of compassion, creativity and responsibility. With two meaningful projects, Quynh Anh has contributed to inspiring many young people on how to use knowledge and passion to contribute to their homeland.
