A female student in Ho Chi Minh City achieved the highest math score in the world for junior high school students in the international certification exam.
That's Van Hoang Minh Anh, a 10th-grade student at Le Hong Phong Specialized High School in Ho Chi Minh City.
Minh Anh achieved the highest math score in the world among junior high school students in the 2024 Pearson Edexcel International General Certificate of Education (IGCSE) exam for students studying the integrated English program. Thousands of students worldwide participated in the exam. Minh Anh took the exam while she was a 9th-grade student at Le Quy Don Junior High School in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City.
Van Hoang Minh Anh said that she is passionate about studying mathematics and inherited her mathematical talent from her mother, a former student specializing in mathematics. Studying the integrated English program from elementary school not only improved her English but also helped her master the knowledge of mathematics and science in English.
“At school, in addition to textbook knowledge, teachers expand on the theory, teach us to apply and use math knowledge in real-world situations. This teaching method helps me grasp the knowledge firmly, strengthen my passion, and explore new things,” Minh Anh said.
Van Hoang Minh Anh (second from the left) and Tran Ha Thanh Truc (second from the right) were awarded the Pearson Edexcel certificate.
Besides Minh Anh, Tran Ha Thanh Truc, a student from Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School, achieved a perfect score of 9 (on an international scale from 1 to 9) in all three subjects: Mathematics, Science, and English at the high school level. Notably, Tran Ha Thanh Truc's English score was the highest among all Vietnamese students participating in the competition.
At the Pearson Edexcel certificate awarding ceremony for 700 students in Ho Chi Minh City who studied the integrated English program (English Project 5695 teaching and learning integrated Mathematics, Science and English subjects using both the English and Vietnamese curricula), 99% of students achieved satisfactory results at all three levels: primary, secondary, and high school, with over 80% achieving a "good" or higher level.
At the lower secondary level, 74% of students achieved excellent or good grades in Mathematics, significantly higher than the global average of 49%. 100% of high school students who took the exam achieved passing results in English, Mathematics, and Science. Of these, 35% achieved perfect scores in Mathematics, higher than the global average of 20%. In English and Science, the percentage of students achieving excellent grades was 54%, double the global average.
The basis for making English the second language in schools.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training, the integrated English program, approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee 10 years ago, is a breakthrough in improving English proficiency for students in Ho Chi Minh City.
The program not only teaches English as a regular foreign language, but also teaches Mathematics and Science in English according to a high-quality curriculum framework, scientifically integrating the Vietnamese and British high school curricula. This allows students to benefit from the advantages of both educational systems. The program's outcome is an internationally recognized certificate – Pearson Edexcel.
This confirms the quality of the program and the correct direction of the city's education sector in improving English language proficiency and subjects taught in English, while encouraging students to take international certification exams and promoting global integration.
According to Mr. Hieu, one of the key tasks outlined in the Politburo's Conclusion 91 is to gradually make English the second language in schools. The successful implementation of the integrated English program is a strategic vision of Ho Chi Minh City in improving foreign language proficiency.
Students' achievements in international certification exams serve as a basis for further expanding the program and making English the second language in schools.
