Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh noted: The 2025 high school graduation exam will have many changes according to the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program. Grade 12 students need to have their own review plan suitable for the subjects they have chosen according to regulations, including math, literature and other elective subjects.
Systematize knowledge
* According to you, how can students remember the core content of the subject?
- There are many ways to systematize knowledge such as creating tables, drawing diagrams, mind maps or summarizing important, core knowledge content in a way that students find easiest to remember and understand. Students can do this gradually right after each lesson or after each chapter or topic so as not to concentrate on the "sprint" review phase.
When systematizing knowledge, students need to pay attention to clarifying the relationship between basic knowledge units in each lesson, each topic, each chapter and between topics and chapters in the subject program.
Next is to systematize the applications of knowledge in practice through a system of questions, exercises, and practices in the subject program (included in textbooks, workbooks, and provided and guided by teachers).
Each subject, especially natural sciences , will have a system of formulas, equations, and relationships between quantities expressed by formulas and expressions.
When reviewing and doing exercises, students must know how to apply formulas and expressions, and know how to make connections and inferences. Understanding how to develop one type of exercise can help them deduce how to do similar exercises.
* Do you have any notes for students as this is the first year of graduation exams according to the 2018 General Education Program?
- The 2018 general education program aims to develop learners' abilities and qualities, and the tests and exams also aim at this purpose. Therefore, right at the review stage, students need to be aware of what the program requires learners to achieve in each topic/lesson and what practical problems the content can be applied to.
You need to remember to systematize your knowledge yourself, not copy from others or ask others to do it for you.
Because the process of systematizing knowledge is the process of self-study to master knowledge in relation to other knowledge in the program as well as the applications of knowledge in practice, thereby helping students to remember deeply and also understand which parts they understand for sure, which parts are still weak, unclear to review further or ask teachers for support and further explanation.
In addition to systematizing knowledge (theory), students need to do exercises. There is no need to do too many, do not do advanced and challenging exercises but stick to the core content. How to ensure the number of exercises is as small as possible but covers all types/requirements. Doing exercises and practicing is a way to review previously systematized knowledge.
Based on the orientation of the 2025 high school graduation exam, students need to closely follow the core content of the high school education program, mainly the grade 12 program and knowledge streams in the grade 10 and 11 programs but with continuity to grade 12.
Multiple choice test has three types of questions.
* According to the newly announced sample exam structure of the Ministry of Education and Training, the multiple-choice exams are more diverse in question formats than last year's exam. How should students review the new formats to meet the exam requirements?
- According to the exam structure announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, multiple choice exams have three types of questions. The first is multiple choice questions. This type has been familiar in previous exams. The two new types are true/false questions and short answers.
Students need to note that in order to do well in true/false and short answer questions, students still need to solve the question like an essay question to have a certain correct answer. The only difference with essay questions is that they do not copy the solution into the test but only fill in the true/false or short answer.
Therefore, students need to clearly understand the topic (question), understand the nature of the knowledge and grasp the steps to solve it, not guess or use tricks. In the true/false question, there will be 4 small ideas, with different scores, not evenly divided. Doing all 4 ideas correctly will get 1.0 point.
Similarly, in the short question format, students also need to understand the requirements clearly and solve them as in the essay format. Especially in this format, the questions may require the application of knowledge to solve practical problems. To do well in the new format of questions, students need to really and firmly learn the basic knowledge and have the skills to do well in different types of exercises.
* The literature subject in the 2025 high school graduation exam will not use materials from textbooks, this is a new point that makes students worried. What do you think about reviewing for this new change?
- First of all, I want to talk about a little misunderstanding in the direction of the Ministry of Education and Training. It is not that the Ministry does not allow schools to use textbooks to create regular and periodic tests, but the Ministry only advises teachers not to depend on textbooks to create tests.
Giving questions with familiar materials that have been used by teachers as teaching aids is not beneficial for students. Because instead of meeting core requirements, students only learn by heart, follow sample texts, and write according to what teachers say in class. This means that school tests can use materials from or outside the textbook, so how can they test the required abilities of students?
Similarly, the 2025 high school graduation exam may also include materials outside of the textbook. If students achieve the required competencies of the program, they will be able to do the test with any material. This will fundamentally change the way students teach, learn, and review: not approaching from the content of the material (literary works) but from the requirements to be achieved.
Not until 2025, but many years ago, the reading comprehension section of the exam also used materials outside the textbook. Students with good reading comprehension skills all met the requirements in this section.

Should I take the high school graduation exam?
* Many students choose to participate in many school mock exams as well as online exam preparation centers. Do you think this is necessary?
- Students can participate in mock tests organized by schools, but not too many. Students should also note that not all mock tests are guaranteed to be close to the requirements of the program. Therefore, the mock test results may not accurately reflect their abilities.
If you do not clearly identify this, you may panic when you get a low score or be subjective when you get a high score. Both of these psychological states are not good for you when you enter the official exam.
Textbooks are the main documents
* Besides textbooks, what other materials do you think students need to refer to for review?
- Students can use the main materials when reviewing: textbooks, the system of questions and exercises in the textbooks, notebooks with lesson notes, practice exercises and sample exam questions announced by the Ministry of Education and Training.
After mastering the core content of the subject, students can refer to other documents. However, they need to have the habit of screening to see if the content and exercises in the new reference documents are similar or different from the system of exercises they have done and need to stick to the basic program.
Students need to pay attention to open questions related to real life, requiring the application of knowledge to solve a problem in life. The life situations in the exam questions may not be in the book or in the lecture content, but when you have mastered the basic knowledge, you can meet the requirements.
The sample exam structure of the Ministry of Education and Training helps students visualize the exam, test time, and know how to divide time for content and question formats.
