Republican senators are in the process of selecting a new leader to take office early next year. Following the November 5th election, the Republican Party secured a narrow majority in the US Senate against the Democratic Party with a 53-46 ratio, according to AFP on November 11th.
According to the U.S. Constitution, the Senate must vote to confirm nominations for key government positions, including executive and legislative seats.
However, according to the Constitution, presidents can also "circumvent" the voting process if the Senate extends its recess. This measure aims to prevent prolonged recesses in the Senate from hindering the work of the government.
On November 10, Donald Trump wrote on social media that "any Republican senator running for Senate Majority Leader must agree to the appointment during the Senate recess."
There are currently three senators competing for the majority leader seat: Rick Scott (Florida), John Thune (South Dakota), and John Cornyn (Texas), and all appear to agree with Trump's "demand."
In addition, US President-elect Trump called on the Senate to temporarily halt the confirmation of judicial nominees while the Republican Party elects its Senate leader.
The next Senate candidate will be sworn in at the beginning of January next year.
