After a period of farewell to Indonesian football, Mr. Shin Tae Yong was just appointed as head coach of Ulsan Hyundai in K League 1 (Korea) on the evening of August 5.
The decision comes just days after they reached an agreement to terminate their contract with their predecessor Kim Pan Gon on August 3.
Despite winning the K League 1 championship for three consecutive seasons, Ulsan is facing many difficulties in the current season. With the desire to restructure the team and create a "new wind", the board of directors has placed their trust in Mr. Shin Tae Yong.
The 54-year-old strategist has been proven at both club and national team level in Korea and Indonesia.
Shin Tae Yong's return to the K League is significant, as he is a legend of the league. As a player, he was a symbol of Seongnam Ilhwa Club (now Seongnam FC) with 102 goals and 69 assists in 405 matches.
He was inducted into the K League Hall of Fame in 2023.
His coaching career began at Seongnam in 2009 and was a resounding success, winning the AFC Champions League in 2010 and the FA Cup in 2011.
The peak of his coaching career must be mentioned as the period of leading the Korean teams. Especially at the 2018 World Cup, although they could not get past the group stage, the Korean team under his direction defeated the defending champion Germany with a score of 2-0.
To Southeast Asian audiences, Coach Shin is widely known for leading the Indonesian team since December 2019. He made history by bringing the Southeast Asian team to the round of 16 for the first time at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and bringing the country's U23 team to the semi-finals of the 2024 Asian tournament.
Speaking on the day of his inauguration, Coach Shin Tae Yong shared: "When I first received the offer from Ulsan, I was very happy but also felt a lot of pressure. I will devote all my abilities to restore glory to the team."
