President Trump's decision was made after Ontario Premier Doug Ford spoke with US Treasury Secretary Howard Lutnick.
In a statement posted on social network X, Mr. Ford confirmed that the province of Ontario will suspend the implementation of a 25% surcharge on electricity exported to the US.
Specifically, US Treasury Secretary Howard Lutnick and Premier Ford had a constructive dialogue on economic relations between the US and Canada.
The statement after the dialogue stated: "Minister Lutnick agreed with the US Trade Representative to meet with Governor Ford in Washington on March 13, to discuss the issue of extending the US-Mexico-Canada Free Trade Agreement (USMCA) before the new import tariffs are implemented on April 2".
In return, Ontario agreed to suspend a 25% surcharge on electricity exported to the US states of Michigan, New York and Minnesota.
Previously, the White House owner wrote on the social network Truth Social that Washington will raise import taxes on Canadian aluminum and steel to 50%.
The decision was made as a direct retaliation after the Canadian provincial government of Ontario imposed a 25% tax on electricity exported to the world's largest economy, from March 10.
Ontario exports the majority of its electricity to the US states of New York, Michigan and Minnesota.
