(CLO) On Sunday, US President-elect Donald Trump suggested that China could play an important role in brokering peace between Russia and Ukraine.
In a social media post, Mr Trump wrote: "Too many lives are being needlessly wasted, too many families are being destroyed. If this continues, it could escalate into something much bigger and much worse. I know Vladimir (Putin) very well. It is time for him to act. China can help. The whole world is waiting."

In an interview broadcast on NBC on Sunday, Mr Trump said he was “getting along very well” with Chinese President Xi Jinping and revealed that the two leaders had spoken this week.
"I have an agreement with President Xi, and we spoke recently. If the 2020 US election results are different, I can convince China to impose the death penalty on anyone smuggling drugs into the United States," Mr. Trump said, referring to the ongoing fentanyl crisis in the US.
Asked if the recent discussion had touched on fentanyl, Mr Trump said: “Not this conversation, but I have discussed it with him before.”
Asked whether Taiwan was part of his latest conversation with Xi, Trump said: "We spoke about three days ago, but we didn't talk about Taiwan. We talked about other things."
Mr Trump's comments come as the world is witnessing major changes in international politics, including the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria and the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The proposal to involve China in the mediation process may reflect a new approach to his foreign policy, placing expectations on Beijing's role in solving global problems.
