This is the first time in decades that a sitting US president has decided not to run for re-election. The last time was President Lyndon Johnson, who withdrew from the campaign in 1968.

President Biden has faced a series of calls from within the Democratic Party over the past month to withdraw from the race, after his first direct debate with former President Donald Trump. 35 Democratic congressmen have publicly asked him to withdraw from the White House race to give the opportunity to a younger candidate.
