Fan Bingbing eating durian creates a fever
During a trip to Melaka, Malaysia in June, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing had the opportunity to enjoy many varieties of local durian.
When the photo was shared on social networks, it created a fever that made many tourists in the "billion-people country" go crazy.
According to SCMP , Fan Bingbing's influence is like a wave that makes a large number of Chinese tourists want to book tours to Malaysia to enjoy durian.
Low Chee Leong, a lawmaker for Malaysia's Melaka state, said that when talking to Chinese tourists who came to enjoy durian at stalls along Tun Perak Road in Bachang, most of them mentioned that "Fan Bingbing was the inspiration for this trip".
“We have seen a surge in Chinese tourists coming to Malaysia to eat durian in the past few weeks. Many have stressed that they want to enjoy the same durian that Fan Bingbing ate in June,” said Mr Leong.
Previously, the Chinese A-list star was invited to be the tourism ambassador for the Malaysian state of Melaka. She visited the state to promote the Visit Melaka 2024 tourism campaign.
Mr. Leong said the locality has seen a surge in Chinese visitors since July 1. The campaign is expected to end on August 31.
Enjoying Musang King and Black Thorn durian is an experience that is especially popular with many people who love this fruit.
Many Chinese tourists said they found the price of durian in Melaka more reasonable than in their home country. In addition to enjoying special durian varieties, they have more opportunities to access other varieties in the state.
“When staying here, visitors can enjoy the best fruits and taste local fruits,” said Mr. Leong.
Malaysia hopes for big win with durian tour
In order to attract international visitors, Malaysia has launched a durian tour program with 62 tours including many sightseeing, culinary and resort experiences.
The program attracts 27 local tour operators spanning 12 states of Malaysia, known as the "Kingdom of Fruits".
According to research, each tour costs from 15USD to 40USD/person (380,000 VND - 1 million VND) depending on the time. If guests go in groups of 2-8 people, the tour will cost from 80USD to 255USD/group (2 million VND - 6.4 million VND).
Akbal Setia, head of the Americas region at Tourism Malaysia, said the launch of these packages is aimed at highlighting the growing popularity of Malaysian durian and culinary tourism. Malaysia is determined to strongly develop durian tours during the harvest season, which lasts from late May to August every year.
The country’s tourism industry expects to sell about 2 million durian tours in 2024 and 2025, with prices starting at $15 per person. In addition to boosting the quantity, Malaysia is also keen on improving the quality of its tour packages.
Mr. Leong said he has received many comments from tour guides saying they have seen positive feedback from Chinese tourists when they bought durian tours and got to taste this fruit while visiting the historic city of Melaka.
Meanwhile, Mr Edwin Teo, owner of ZJY Fruit Trading in Jalan Tun Perak, said he can provide customers with a variety of good quality durians at cheaper prices because he has his own supply from fruit trees in his garden.
"After watching viral videos on social media, many foreign visitors asked tour guides to take them to my garden," said Mr. Teo.
