After US President Donald Trump criticized Taiwan's (China) chip dominance, its technology chief said on February 15 that no country needs to control the semiconductor industry, which is very complex and requires a division of labor.

On February 15, Mr. Donald Trump reiterated the claim that Taiwan (China) had taken this industry and wanted to bring it back to the US, and said he wanted to restore the US chip manufacturing industry.

Mr. Wu Cheng-wen, head of Taiwan's Science and Technology Council, said the island will be a reliable partner in the global semiconductor industry's supply chain.

In recent years, Taiwan has often been asked how its semiconductor industry became an internationally recognized benchmark.

“Obviously we didn’t get to this point without external reasons,” he said, recounting how they gradually built and developed the industry from the 1970s, including helping to found TSMC, now the world’s largest contract chipmaker, in 1987.

This shows that the Taiwanese territory has invested half a century of hard work to achieve the success it has today – an achievement that is not easy to achieve for many other economies .

Each economy has its own expertise in the chip sector, from Japan, which is strong in chemical and equipment manufacturing, to the US, which leads in the design and application of advanced systems, the scientist said.

"The semiconductor industry is complex, requiring specialization and precise division of labor. Because each country and region has its own industrial strengths, no one party can or needs to completely control or monopolize all technologies globally."

Taiwan (China) is ready to play a central role in supporting "friendly partners" to participate in the semiconductor supply chain appropriately, he stressed.
